Who are we looking for?

The Sydney office are looking for a dynamic Legal Project Manager (LPM), our first in the region, to be a part of our global Legal Project Delivery (LPD) team and to provide project management support to our legal team in Sydney and across our other APAC offices. The ideal candidate is an experienced Project Manager with experience in either legal or another professional services background. They can work autonomously and, also collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. They are highly motivated and proactively look for opportunities to market and promote the LPD function internally and externally.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Process Optimisation arm of the team and also the Technology Team to continually evolve and add efficiency to how we work and to design creative solutions.

Scope of the role

The Role of the Legal Project Manager sits within the Legal Project Delivery team and will:

  • Promote and facilitate engagement with the LPD team across the firm by building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders
  • Promote the benefits of legal project management across external networks such as current clients and prospective clients and continuing to build and develop those relationships
  • Help to increase efficiency in matter management and legal service delivery through the application of project management methodology aligned with the Bird & Bird framework
  • Support the Head of Legal Project Delivery in building the function and supporting more junior members of the team in their career development

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide billable support to matter fee earners on varying matter types by guiding them through best practice approaches at each stage of the matter lifecycle
  • Build relationships with stakeholders across the firm and ensure open communication and knowledge sharing
  • Coach junior team members and provide guidance and support where required
  • Act as a point of contact for clients, setting the agenda for, and leading, regular project meetings and tracking action points through to completion
  • Support fee earners in effectively scoping matters and applying the most appropriate resource model
  • Develop and maintain bespoke project trackers and reporting templates where required to best meet client requirements
  • Managing risks and scope creep throughout the life of a matter
  • Coordinate multiple parties, across practice group and jurisdictions as required
  • Facilitate effective communication between all stakeholders, including regular lessons learned reviews
  • Actively monitor fees and provide regular internal and external financial reporting
  • Encourage sharing of ideas and promote a collaborative working environment
  • Identifying areas for process optimisation support and escalating/referring via the relevant channels as appropriate

Skills and Attributes

The successful candidate will:

  • be project management experienced gained in a law firm or professional services firm
  • be APM qualified or similar
  • be self-motivated and proactive with strong attention to detail
  • have excellent IT skills, in particular Excel
  • be familiar with various legal tech platforms and ability to learn quickly
  • be very organised and able to prioritise effectively
  • have the ability to manage multiple workstreams and coordinate stakeholders across practice groups and jurisdictions
  • be resilient and efficiency oriented
  • have stakeholder engagement and management experience
  • be able to confidently communicate at all levels, written and verbal, internally and with clients
  • have budget management experience
  • have experience leading project update meetings
  • have a flexible approach with ability to adapt processes to suit specific requirements
  • have the ability to work autonomously and continue to drive projects
  • be comfortable working as part of a global team remotely
  • Supervisory experience a plus
