Full job description
About the role
We are seeking applications for Electrical Apprentices (ideally 3rd year) to join the team at the Sydney Steel Mill. This is an exciting opportunity to begin your career and gain exposure to one of Australia’s most unique steel making facilities.
Our apprentices tell us that it's the balance between working and studying that will really give you the edge. When you're not at TAFE learning the technicalities of your trade, you'll be on site putting what you've learnt into practice with heavy machinery and equipment. You'll have space to balance both study and work. You'll be challenged and stretched, but you'll find it's the best way to develop and learn. During the program, you'll be able to draw upon the experience of your team and have the guidance from your manager to make sure your career starts in the best way.
At the end of your apprenticeship, you'll be a fully qualified tradesperson and if you have the desire, you can progress into other opportunities like supervision or further post-trade study.
You’ll gain hands-on exposure to a diverse range of equipment and processes, including PLCs, drives, SCADA, high‑voltage electrical reticulation, robotics, and field instrumentation.
To be considered for this program, the below criteria is essential:
- Successfully completed Year 11 or higher
- A demonstrated interest in undertaking an apprenticeship
- A strong commitment to working safely
- The ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team
Key Benefits
- Award-winning workplace: 2026 AFR BOSS Best Places to Work Gold Winner, recognising our commitment to people, culture and performance.
- Generous parental leave: 20 weeks paid Primary Carer Leave and 3 weeks paid Partner Leave for those who have worked at the business for at least 12 months. The company also provides superannuation contributions for the Primary Carer during the period of unpaid parental leave for eligible employees (limitations apply).
- Access to long service leave after 5 years: Employees who are not covered by an Enterprise Agreement can access accrued Long Service Leave (LSL) at the rate of 1.3 weeks per year of service after 5 years continuous service.
- Employee Benefits Program: Employee Added Extras (EAE), our Employee Benefits Program, provides discounts for you and your friends and family on gift cards, shopping, groceries, home products, car rentals, holidays, recreation and more
- Recruitment referral awards: $1500 is awarded to eligible employees for referring friends or family to an open role if the candidate is successful.
- Corporate rates for private health insurance: Nib Health Insurance offers discounted cover for employees.
- Employee Assistance Program: Sonder, our EAP, offers confidential, professional and free counselling and support resources in areas such as marriage/family difficulties, interpersonal conflict, stress, depression or anxiety, alcohol and/or drug dependencies, grief, loss or trauma and workplace problems.
