What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the Unaccredited Trainee in Paediatrics at Blacktown-Mt Druitt Hospital is to provide effective clinical management of Paediatric patients, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in Paediatric practice, in a complex environment. The Unaccredited Trainee is a key member of the Paediatrics Team who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.

It is expected that the Unaccredited Trainee has been exposed to all aspects of general paediatrics medicine and is able to competently assess children presenting to the Emergency department across both sites (BMDH) and make appropriate provisional diagnoses and management plan. The Unaccredited Trainee is also expected to be proficient at both neonatal and paediatric resuscitation. The trainee will be working as part of a team to provide holistic medical care for paediatric and neonatal inpatients. Trainee is also expected to review patients in Paediatric Ambulatory Care clinics at Blacktown & Mount Druitt Hospital. The Unaccredited Trainee will be exposed to a broad range of developmental and behavioural problems and they are expected to undertake the assessments as part of the multidisciplinary teams and independently where required. The Unaccredited Trainee will be expected to assess children at risk and complete a SCAN (Suspected child abuse and neglect) assessment when required.

Unaccredited Trainee will also provide consultation and advice regarding pain, fluid management and drug doses to the paediatric surgical patients admitted at Blacktown Hospital as well as assessing children presenting to Blacktown Emergency Department and arrange transfer to a paediatric facility if appropriate.

  • Unaccredited Trainees work across both sites and across 3 units
  • A shift work roster of mostly 12.5 hours shifts, including night shifts and weekends
  • The roster also includes "sick-on-call" shifts where they may be required to fill a shift within the specified 24 hour period at short notice
  • Unaccredited Trainees may be the most senior paediatric doctor onsite overnight

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  • Minimum of 2 years post graduate training, including recent experience in both general paediatrics (minimum 12 months experience) and neonatology (minimum 3 months). and sufficient clinical experience in order to undertake the clinical duties of the role in a variety of clinical settings and proficiency in basic and advanced paediatric and neonatal resuscitation.
  • Advanced ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
  • Advanced communication skills, including the ability to convey, and adapt verbal and written information to a clinical and non-clinical audience.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  • Advanced clinical skills and judgement, with the ability to make sound decisions and problem solve with an awareness of limitations and ability to learn independently and modify behaviour accordingly.
  • Previous experience in and willingness to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training.
