Job details
Full job description
Senior Technical Specialist, National Fibre
Date: 30 Apr 2026
Location: Macquarie Park, Australia
Company: Singtel Group
Optus is an Australian telecommunications company, delivering more than 11 million services to our customers every day across mobile, broadband and digital solutions.
The National Fibre Senior Technical Specialist is responsible for defining and maintaining the technical strategy, architecture, and design of Optus’ national fibre network to support Fixed, Enterprise, and Mobile services. Reporting to the Associate Director, National Fibre, this role sets the roadmap for fibre standards, including specifications for glass types, cable construction, and deployment methodologies, while ensuring compliance with industry and internal standards.
Key responsibilities include leading architecture and detailed design for aerial and underground fibre deployments, governing design rules for pits and enclosures, and conducting lab testing for fibre components. The role acts as the technical prime for fibre-related projects, managing scoping, impact analysis, documentation, and deployment oversight. It also provides Tier 3 support for fibre faults, evaluates new technologies, and collaborates with internal teams and vendors to deliver strategic fibre initiatives aligned with long-term growth and cost optimisation objectives.
Your day to day will consist of
- Lead end-to-end architecture, prescribing standards, fulfil compliance obligations, design and integration of fibre networks, ensuring alignment with operational and strategic objectives.
- Convert business and product needs into detailed fibre network design specifications and documentation.
- Produce and maintain high-quality engineering documents, including design standards, guidelines, and material specifications.
- Assess existing infrastructure, implement design updates, and maintain adherence to evolving standards and environmental conditions.
- Act as the technical interface with internal teams and external partners.
- Mentor junior engineers, deliver technical training, and define best practices for fibre planning and deployment.
- Contribute to network planning, budgeting, and provide expert recommendations on fibre strategy, deployment models, and lifecycle management.
What makes you perfect for the role?
- In-depth knowledge of fibre design principles, understanding of International and Australian standards for optic cables, deployment models (aerial and underground), and passive infrastructure standards, particularly within the Australian market.
- Skilled in crafting and maintaining technical standards for fibre components, including cables, pits, enclosures, and splice closures.
- Hands-on experience with lab testing, System Requirement Specification, Inspection Test Plan and reports, verification and validation, KPIs for fibre assemblies and ensuring compliance with internal and industry standards.
- Ability to evaluate environmental and operational factors to define efficient deployment strategies and enforce design rules.
- Strong capability in managing asset lifecycle planning and ensuring cyber compliance for passive fibre infrastructure.
- Proficient in producing clear, high-quality design documentation and effectively communicating complex concepts to diverse stakeholders.
- Skilled in diagnosing complex fibre-related issues, conducting root cause analysis, and supporting resolution through advanced escalation processes.
What’s in it for you?
- Competitive remuneration and employee discounts. Make life easier (and more affordable) with $80 monthly credit and 25% off Optus products and unique shopping discounts with our retail partners.
- Flexible working arrangements with opportunities to work three days in the office, two days remote or home.
- Vibrant and collaborative office campus that includes cafes, convenience store, chill out zones, GP, post office, gym and on-site childcare centre.
- Competitive leave policies, including additional 'Connected’ days to focus on culture, family, health, community, or whatever’s important to you.
- We support growing families with inclusive, carer-neutral paid Parental Leave of up to 16 weeks.
- Direct your own development and build future-ready skills with Optus U’s industry-focused micro-credentials, developed with La Trobe and Macquarie Universities.
- Build meaningful connections through employee-led networks and diversity initiatives including Culture Connect, Elevate Women, Disability Network and Express Yourself (LGBTQIA+).
- Put your wellbeing first with free access to counselling and support services, 24/7 — in-person, by phone, SMS, or video.
- Free Optus bus from Macquarie University Metro Station (every 6-8 minutes); morning and afternoon.
