An exciting opportunity has arisen for someone to join the Food Operations as a ‘Leafcutter’!

Our dedicated Leaf Cutting department at Australia Zoo is primarily responsible for the collection of leaf and browse for koalas and other species. Leaf Cutters are employed predominately to ensure that all leaf cutting and browse collection takes place in a safe and ethical way. They are required to be multi-skilled and may, in some cases, have certificates or have specialised backgrounds.

To be successful in this position, you will have a demonstrated ability to work in a high-performance environment, with a capacity to deliver all requirements of the role, great work ethic and the ability to work to a high standard within a team.

Duties Include:

  • Leaf collection as required.
  • Mowing and whipper-snipper use.
  • Operation and general maintenance of machinery associated with browse collection.
  • Maintain records of observations and reports on stock levels and maintenance logs.
  • Communicate with the Supervisor regarding ideas to apply to the section, and problems occurring within the section.
  • Be competent in all aspects of Zoo emergency responses i.e.: fire, dangerous animal escape etc.
  • Maintain correct cleaning procedures for all habitats/areas assigned.
  • Clean, feed and maintain insects and associated rooms as necessary.
  • Maintain Keeper office / fruit room and other buildings and surrounding grounds (including routine gutter cleans).
  • Maintain relevant vehicles and trailers.
  • Provide a high standard of customer service.

Essential Criteria:

  • Hold current Driver’s Licence (manual).
  • Available to work weekends, public holidays, and school holiday periods.
  • Previous grounds/maintenance experience.
  • Experience operating machinery, such as 4WD’s and other vehicles.
