Primary objective
Provide a high standard of medical care to patients, admitted or non-admitted, within the Top End Health Services, which includes
Royal Darwin Palmerston Hospitals and Katherine District Hospital. Promote clinical standards and quality of care through effective
and efficient patient management, which includes attendance at teaching and unit meetings, outreach clinics in remote
communities and regional centres throughout Northern Territory (NT). Provide supervision, teaching and mentoring of Resident
Medical Officers and Interns.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Undertaking initial assessment of patients upon admission and the daily progress assessment of the patient.
2. Accurately recording history, examination, management plans, investigations and actions taken in the patient’s medical records.
3. Communicating effectively with senior medical staff, nursing and other staff in relation to diagnostic requests, management
plans and consultations and follow-up to ensure that appropriate action is taken. Documenting conversations with treating
consults regarding patient management.
4. Requesting and reviewing necessary radiology, pathology and diagnostics to provide advice on the results to relevant
Consultants.
5. Organising appropriate formal consultations after discussion with treating clinician and documenting specific consultation
clinical question(s).
6. Provide on-going support and information to the patient and family (where appropriate). Documenting family meetings when
required.
7. Ensure that arrangements are made for autopsy when required and ensure death certificates are done in a timely manner.
8. Ensuring that discharge summaries are done in a timely fashion (within 48 hours of discharge) and sent to those involved in
the after-care of the patient including their GP.
9. Participate in postgraduate education, attend Grand Rounds, Journal Club, Medical Registrar Teaching and X-ray meetings,
participate in education of JMO’s, undertake audits and research projects.
10. Contribute to positive team dynamic by respectful communication including handover of appropriate clinical material prior to
leave and rostered days off. Attend and participate in all appropriate handover forums.
11. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. Passed RACP written and clinical exam or recognised overseas equivalent.
3. Sound clinical knowledge in assessment and management of patients and a commitment to provide appropriate high quality
service.
4. An interest in and a commitment to improving Aboriginal health.\
