Full job description

Bloomberg News is one of the biggest financial and business news organizations in the world. We lead the way in breaking news and providing analysis on financial markets, from daily coverage through to in-depth features. We are known for our quality, accuracy and ability to deliver news investors can use. It’s what keeps us inventing and re-inventing, all the time.

As one of the world’s largest exporters of iron ore, coal and liquefied natural gas, Australia's economy is deeply tied to China’s growth cycle — making it a key barometer for shifts in global demand. At the same time, Australia is navigating its own set of challenges, from persistent inflation and a sharp rise in interest rates to housing affordability pressures and slowing consumer growth. Politically, it sits at the intersection of economics and geopolitics, balancing a critical trade relationship with China against deepening security ties with the US and its allies.

We are looking for a reporter to join our team covering Australia’s economy and policy landscape. You’ll play a key role in tracking economic data, Reserve Bank of Australia decisions, and government policy, while helping readers understand how global forces — from commodity cycles to geopolitical tensions — shape domestic outcomes. The beat offers opportunities to break market-moving news, from shifts in the Australian dollar to changes in mining investment and fiscal strategy. Based in Sydney, we’re seeking a versatile journalist who can deliver clear, accurate reporting, develop smart analysis on breaking developments, and produce enterprise that uncovers the deeper trends driving Australia’s economy. The ideal candidate has strong news instincts, is comfortable working with data, understands economics and collaborates effectively across teams.

The role requires you to cover the central bank, economic indicators, government policy decisions and themes that shape the economic outlook, from labor market trends to trade frictions to housing and many more. It involves collaborating closely with teams covering markets, companies, commodities, technology and research, and also entails using the power of the information on the Bloomberg terminal and working across platforms including video, web, TV, graphics, blogs and podcasts.

We'll trust you to:
  • Break news, find opportunities for fast analysis and execute on ambitious enterprise
  • Generate original and innovative ideas for stories that are relevant to discerning readers in Asia and around the world
  • Work collaboratively across teams, geographies and individual departments within Bloomberg News
  • Find ways to ensure our coverage stays ahead of the competition

You'll need to have:
  • At least 3 years of experience in journalism, preferably covering economics, financial markets or business news
  • Excellent reporting skills and proven ability to break news
  • Experience working in a real-time news environment
  • An ability to write clearly, quickly and accurately in English, often under time pressure
  • Collaborative attitude and effective communication skills
  • Demonstrated continuous career growth within an organization

Life at Bloomberg is many things, but it’s never dull. We’re a truly global business with a truly diverse workforce. We pride ourselves on being open, inclusive and collaborative, and provide a work environment that inspires our employees to be their best. We offer competitive compensation, comprehensive healthcare coverage, and programs to support you and your family through different life stages, from parental leave to generous retirement savings plans.
