Advance sight-saving genetic therapies through cutting-edge eye disease research using stem cells, genomics and gene editing.

Together we are making a difference for kids living with genetic disease.

Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) was Australia’s first dedicated paediatric research facility and is now one of the world’s most highly regarded independent medical research organisations. Our research focuses on the four key areas impacting children’s health: cancer, genomics and genetic diseases, neurobiology, and embryology.

In this role we are seeking a Research Assistant to join the Eye Genetics Research Unit, supporting innovative research into the genetic and molecular causes of eye disease and the development of next-generation therapies. Working both independently and collaboratively, the role contributes to laboratory research activities, data analysis, scientific reporting, and the advancement of sight-saving treatments for inherited retinal conditions.

Work with a team of dedicated professionals

We are looking for a Research Assistant to join our team to:

  • Conduct high-quality laboratory research to support projects investigating the causes of inherited eye diseases and the development of novel genetic therapies
  • Apply advanced scientific techniques such as cell culture, retinal organoid generation, genomic technologies, and other specialised laboratory methods to drive research outcomes
  • Maintain accurate research records and analyse data, contributing to scientific publications, presentations, and the translation of discoveries into potential therapies
  • Collaborate in a dynamic research environment, sharing knowledge, supporting team activities, and helping maintain a safe, organised, and high-performing laboratory

A rewarding role in every way

  • Full time/Fixed Term role– 37.5 hours per week
  • Excellent not for profit tax benefits
  • A flexible and supportive work environment where everyone’s contribution is highly valued

What can you bring to this role?

  • Hands-on experience in a research laboratory environment, including tissue culture techniques
  • Strong scientific research skills with the ability to generate, analyse and accurately record research data
  • Excellent organisational, communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Experience in human stem cell culture, retinal organoids, or advanced microscopy techniques will be highly regarded
