HERRENKNECHT AUSTRALIA

Herrenknecht is a world-leading supplier of mechanised tunnelling machines and associated equipment for all round tunnelling solutions. Herrenknecht Australia, a subsidiary of the global organisation, operates with a small, dedicated team offering site support to active local tunnelling projects before, during and after TBM excavation. In-house engineering capabilities allow us to work with tunnelling contractors to find solutions to unique and challenging problems related to tunnel construction.

THE ROLE

We have openings of several positions available within our company for Project Engineers/Managers, Skilled Tunnelling Technicians with mechanical / hydraulics experience, PLC Electricians and Boilermakers to join our team.

These roles report to Senior Management. The purpose of these positions is for current and upcoming Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) projects. The positions will be creating a team that will be responsible for maintaining safe work procedures, project planning and meeting delivery schedules and budgets, utilising the individual’s skillset of the roles required.

Commencement of our projects have begun and offer casual / full time roles based in NSW, VIC, WA, and SA.

SOME OF THE KEY DUTIES FOR THE ROLES INCLUDE:

Project Engineers /Managers speak with Engineers and Technicians to understand the tasks and problems to be documented

  • Together with Pit Boss / Supervisor manage the TBM daily working crew
  • Ensure TBM crew work to all quality standards including completion of inspection and test plans for all drives and works
  • Lead morning pre-start with Pit boss/ supervisor and toolbox talks as required for working crews
  • Assist in troubleshooting equipment and measuring and monitoring consumable usage and wear
  • Maintain accurate records of progress and completion operations as required by company systems and project procedures

Skilled Tunnelling Technicians provide assistance to the engineering department

  • Lead and project manager the successful delivery and commissioning of Herrenknecht TBM’s
  • Prepare condition and progress reports and update the reports on a weekly basis as the work progresses
  • Prepare other technical documents including safety documents, work procedures, commissioning procedures etc.
  • Operate Herrenknecht TBM according to Herrenknecht principles and parameters.
  • Responsible for daily maintenance and routine maintenance & repairs of tunnel boring equipment

PLC electricians (programmers) design, maintains & troubleshoots machines and plants that uses programmable logic controllers

  • Identify and provide reliable solutions for technical issues
  • Complex high-voltage systems
  • Regularly checking connections, updating software, and ensuring proper ventilation

Boilermakers with structural steel fabrication and installation experience

  • Pipefitting 25mm to 600mm
  • Stainless instrument tube fitting
  • Fabricating and welding to close tolerances
  • Inspect, remove and replace vessels
  • Assist with mobilisation and de-mobilisation of projects

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

Project Engineer/Manager with minimum 5 years some relevant technical experience (preferably Mechanical/Hydraulics), ideally with experience working with Herrenknecht TBMs

  • Proficient computing skills, including MS Word and Excel
  • AutoCAD skills preferred
  • Licence to travel between office and job site
  • Time and task management skills
  • Committed, driven and persistent

  • Flexible approach and positive attitude
  • Ability to work with staff at all levels
  • Operate in a hands-on manner
  • Strong communication skills (oral & written)
  • Ability to work independently to organise and prioritise demands, handle multiple complex tasks simultaneously, set and meet deadlines and follow-through within a fast-paced environment with multiple and competing demands

Tunnelling Technicians with minimum 8-10 years’ experience operating Herrenknecht TBM’s

  • Demonstrated experience of setting up TBM operations and managing drives
  • Experience of long drives with Herrenknecht equipment utilising hydraulics and complex TBM lubrication systems and various grouting systems
  • Experience of completing curved TBM drives (both horizontal & vertical curves)
  • Experience of completing marine and or complex underwater drives
  • Experience, knowledge and understanding of complex bentonite slurry systems
  • Knowledge of PLC (Programmable Logic Control) systems for TBM works
  • Knowledge of guidance systems and experience of survey basics for pitch/ yaw and roll relevant to TBM control systems and surveys
  • Knowledge of basic geomechanics to understand the effects of the TBM on its surrounds and the environment
  • Knowledge of shaft sinking, auger boring and open face TBM methods an advantage
  • Knowledge of different TBM types

PLC technicians with a minimum of 2 years’ experience on Herrenknecht TBM’s

  • Solid grasp of electrical systems
  • Solid grasp of circuits and automation principles
  • Be proficient in deciphering electrical schematics & technical documentation
  • Able to interpret PLC programming logic and address system issues effectively

Boilermaker with a minimum of 2 years’ experience on Herrenknecht TBM’s

  • Blueprint reading
  • Welding
  • Flame cutting
  • Performing routine maintenance on equipment
  • Determining time frame of repair and replacement of equipment
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and work at heights
  • Analysing needs and product requirements to create a design

Required Training to be held or required at Onboarding:

  • Construction Industry (Aus) White Card
  • Confined space entry
  • EWP
  • Working at Height
  • Dogman ticket
  • Gantry Crane
  • HR Licence
  • First Aid at Work
  • Police Check
  • Drug & Alcohol Clearance

Physical & Locational Demands

Physical Requirements

  • Performing the duties of this position will require prolonged standing, sitting and/or walking
  • Specific vision requirements include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to quickly focus between various work front adjustments
  • Computer control station work is required which involves visual focus on screens, dials and documents
  • Control dexterity to handle/ feel objects, dials and control gauges
  • Required to climb ladders and or stairs to and from shafts and pits
  • Capability to work in confined spaces when required
  • Ability to hear alarms, control devices, verbal commands and radio transmissions and other general construction noises
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, inside and outside
  • Potential requirement or need to lift work equipment up to 20kg

General Requirements

  • Read and write in English
  • Willingness to travel and live away from home for extended periods, as required by project locations
  • Hold an approved driving licence
