## Building Inspector
## Position Overview
We are looking for a detail-oriented and experienced Building Inspector to join our team and play a vital role in upholding the safety, integrity, and compliance of built structures across our jurisdiction. The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing building plans, conducting site inspections, and ensuring all construction activity adheres to relevant building codes, regulations, and standards. This role suits a qualified professional with a strong technical background, sound knowledge of Australian building legislation, and the ability to communicate findings clearly to a range of stakeholders.
## Key Responsibilities
- Review and assess building plans, drawings, and specifications to ensure compliance with applicable building codes, local ordinances, zoning regulations, and contract requirements, providing clear written or verbal advice to applicants and developers
- Evaluate submitted plans and, where satisfactory, approve applications and issue building permits in accordance with regulatory requirements
- Conduct periodic site visits and inspections throughout all stages of construction to monitor overall compliance and identify any deviations from approved plans
- Inspect structural, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and other building systems to verify correct installation, alignment, structural elevation, and adherence to relevant codes and specifications
- Utilise survey instruments, metering devices, and specialist test equipment to carry out accurate and thorough inspections
- Prepare and maintain detailed written reports documenting inspection findings, observations, and any identified non-conformances
- Issue formal violation notices and stop-work orders where construction activity is found to be non-compliant, and follow up to confirm rectification before work resumes
- Certify the compliance of structures and plans with the corresponding building regulations upon satisfactory completion of inspections
- Liaise professionally with builders, architects, engineers, property owners, and local government representatives to resolve compliance matters and provide guidance on building requirements
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of permits, inspections, approvals, and correspondence in line with organisational and legislative requirements
- Stay current with changes to the National Construction Code, Australian Standards, and relevant state or local government legislation, applying updated knowledge consistently across all assessments
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Relevant tertiary qualification or Diploma in Building Surveying, Construction, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline
- Current registration or accreditation as a Building Surveyor or Building Inspector with the relevant state authority (e.g. VBA, QBCC, or equivalent)
- Demonstrated experience in building inspections, surveying, or construction compliance within a residential, commercial, or mixed-use environment
- Thorough knowledge of the National Construction Code (NCC), Building Code of Australia (BCA), and relevant state-based building legislation and standards
- Proficiency in interpreting architectural and engineering drawings, plans, and technical specifications
- Competence in using inspection tools, survey instruments, and metering or test equipment
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, accurate inspection reports and official documentation
- Sound judgement and the ability to make confident, well-reasoned compliance decisions
- Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, with a professional and constructive approach to resolving disputes or non-compliance issues
- High level of organisation and time management, with the ability to manage multiple inspections and competing deadlines effectively
- Proficiency in relevant software platforms and digital record-keeping systems
## Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Building Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field
- Unrestricted or higher-class registration allowing assessment across a broad range of building classes
- Experience working within a local council, certifying authority, or private building surveying practice
- Familiarity with planning legislation, zoning requirements, and development approval processes relevant to the applicable state or territory
- First aid certification and current construction-site safety induction (White Card)
- Experience using building permit management software or GIS-based inspection platforms
## Why Join Us?
- Be part of a collaborative and professional team that is committed to building safety, community wellbeing, and excellence in regulatory practice
- Enjoy genuine work-life balance with structured working hours and a supportive, flexible team environment
- Access ongoing professional development opportunities, including training on legislative updates, industry conferences, and pathways to advanced accreditation
- Benefit from a competitive remuneration package that recognises your experience and expertise, with clear opportunities for career progression
- Work in a role that makes a meaningful impact — ensuring the safety and compliance of the built environment for communities across the region
