Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across three campuses in the north-east of Melbourne and statewide. About the Child Inpatient Unit
The Child Inpatient Unit is part of Austin Health's Infant, Child and Youth Mental Health Service (ICYMHS) in the Mental Health Division. It services children from metropolitan and regional areas of Victoria. The Unit has 12 beds and is based at the Austin Hospital. The Unit admits children aged 12 and under for assessment and treatment. Children are often admitted to the Unit with their parent/carer and/or further family (i.e. siblings).
These children may be experiencing emotional, behavioural and/or social difficulties and have usually received some outpatient treatment. A high proportion of the children on the Unit are admitted under a planned circumstance for an admission usually for a number of weeks (often utilising weekend leave). The Unit does, however, also admit children under crisis circumstances for short periods.
About the role
The RPN 3 Associate Nurse Unit Manager is recognised as the clinical leader within Austin Health’s Child Inpatient Unit, who works closely with the Nurse Unit Manager, medical and allied health leads to ensure the provision of quality psychiatric nursing through effective staff management and clinical leadership. You will facilitate and promote a team approach and assist and promote staff education and development.
The ANUM is an experienced clinician who will nurse in accordance with Recovery Oriented Practice, Trauma Informed Care, and the Safewards Model. In utilizing a recovery approach, you will communicate using recovery language, promoting hope, and fostering the individual’s self-determination, strengths and goals. The ANUM will escalate to senior staff all relevant incidents and occurrences both during business hours and in the after-hour period; consistent with escalation policies and procedures and a commitment to the least restrictive model of care.
About you
You will be someone who has excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with consumers, families/carers, colleagues, clinical staff, and other health and welfare service.
You’ll further bring with you:
- Displayed a clear understanding of and practice in the principles of recovery-orientated trauma informed and patient focused/family-centered care,
- Collaborative practice and expertise in engaging children and their families within a clinical setting.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, including expressing own viewpoints respectfully and valuing the perspectives of others.
- An awareness and practice knowledge of relevant legislation and practice frameworks (e.g. Mental Health Act (2022) and Child Youth and Families Act (2005).
