The hospital is committed to high-quality, safe, patient-centred care. The Cardiology department has a particularly strong research ethos, and will be of particular appeal to highly motivated clinicians who wish to develop both their clinical as well as their research portfolios. Additionally, within the department, there exists a diverse range of affiliated services including specialty hypertension and lipid clinics led by world renowned experts.
The RPH coronary catheter laboratory performs 2500 coronary angiograms, approximately 1000 coronary interventions, over 300 physiology studies (including FFR, CFR, IMR and INOCA testing including ACh provocation testing) and several PFO and ASD closures per year. More than 90% of coronary procedures are performed via trans-radial access. There is an established CTO program, with dedicated lists. The team receives regular proctoring from visiting national and internationally renowned CTO experts, providing exceptional training opportunities. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the hospital’s PCI database as part of routine clinical governance.
This one year full-time funded fellowship is offered to interested applicants seeking to gain further experience in the sub-specialty of interventional cardiology. The successful applicant is expected to achieve high volume, first operator experience in acute and elective coronary intervention.
The training program will significantly equip and expose the fellow with respect to:
- Percutaneous coronary intervention
- Complex procedures (including CTO, rotablation, IVL, left main intervention)
- Intravascular imaging (OCT and IVUS)
- Coronary physiology (FFR / CFR / IMR)
- INOCA testing (microcirculatory resistance and vasomotor disorder testing)
- Structural heart procedures (including PFO / ASD closure)
The Fellow will work directly with the interventional cardiologists and be involved in complex cases including CTO, bifurcation lesions, left main and multi-vessel intervention. The successful applicant will be expected to perform at an independent and senior level in the assessment of patients’ pre and post-procedure, with responsibilities for continuity and supervision of patient care provided by junior medical and nursing-staff. They will be responsible for managing the appropriate work up of patients likely to undergo intervention and assist in the management of cath lab scheduling to improve lab efficiency. They are invited to be involved in the on-call STEMI roster after hours.
The Fellow will be expected to contribute to the regular audit of procedural outcomes and mortality and morbidity reviews and will be expected to present cases for discussion regarding revascularisation strategies at the weekly multi-disciplinary meeting. The fellow is expected to support and contribute to the active research program including interventional studies. The successful candidate will be encouraged to make use of the ample opportunities to be involved in high-calibre research studies in concert with our department’s premier research unit affiliated with the University of Western Australia.
