Senior Medical Officer (SMO)
Lead with purpose. Influence systems. Make a lasting impact on Community.
At Galambila Aboriginal Health Service, we believe healthcare is about more than treating illness. It is about building relationships, strengthening communities, and creating better health outcomes for future generations.
We are seeking an experienced and values driven Senior Medical Officer (SMO) to join our leadership team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of primary healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on Gumbaynggirr Country.
This is an opportunity to combine clinical excellence with leadership, mentoring, service development, and clinical governance while working within a highly collaborative multidisciplinary environment. An ideal opportunity for an experienced GP who is passionate about mentoring emerging clinicians, influencing clinical practice, and helping build a sustainable medical workforce.
Why Join Galambila?
Galambila is a proudly Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation delivering holistic, culturally safe, and community-led healthcare. Our vision is simple but powerful: Stronger and healthier together.
We are committed to supporting our community to lead and shape their own health and wellbeing journey through the delivery of comprehensive, culturally safe, sustainable, and high quality primary health care services.
Everything we do is guided by our organisational values: Compassion (Ngalanambaygal), Respect (Garla-Ngarraynggi), Empowerment (Balmuuna), Inclusivity (Yilaminda Girrwaawa), Accountability (Gaarla-Gayigam).
As Senior Medical Officer, you will have the opportunity to influence not only individual patient outcomes, but also clinical systems, workforce capability, governance, and organisational strategy. This role directly supports Galambila's Strategic Plan, helping strengthen access to care, develop future clinicians, build workforce capability, and improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
About the Role

- Support safe, evidence based and culturally appropriate medical practice.
- Contribute to clinical governance, accreditation, audit and quality improvement activities.
- Provide clinical oversight for complex presentations and multidisciplinary care planning.
- Mentor and develop the next generation of rural and Aboriginal health clinicians.
- Support organisational strategy, systems improvement and service development initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve patient outcomes, service integration and clinical efficiency.
- Champion culturally safe and community-centred healthcare.
About You
You are an experienced medical practitioner who enjoys leading others, building capability, and contributing to broader organisational success.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Current registration as a Medical Practitioner with AHPRA
- Fellowship with RACGP or ACRRM (or equivalent specialist General Practice recognition)
- Accredited GP Supervisor status with RACGP or ACRRM, or willingness to obtain supervisor accreditation (highly desirable)
- Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership, supervision and mentoring
- Strong understanding of clinical governance, risk management and quality improvement frameworks
- Experience supporting multidisciplinary and integrated models of care
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- A commitment to culturally safe healthcare and improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- The ability to balance strategic thinking with practical clinical leadership.
Experience working within an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO) or rural and remote health setting will be highly regarded.

- Flexible working arrangements available. Monday to Friday service model
- Competitive remuneration package negotiable based on experience
- Salary packaging benefits available
- Ongoing professional development and leadership opportunities
- Beautiful coastal lifestyle in Coffs Harbour
- Relocation assistance may be available through relevant government programs.
