Who are we?
healthAbility, as the name suggests, plays a unique and valuable role in the health system. We work to address the root causes of vulnerability, prevent disease and promote lifelong health outcomes, empowering people in our community to live their best life.
Our role is also supporting people to self-manage long-term health conditions, such as diabetes and mental health challenges, with multidisciplinary teams delivering community-based programs in a comfortable setting. We also support people, including older people and people with disability, to stay living at home longer and to live well in their community.
Our broad range of primary health services, care management and in home and community support services can be tailored to an individual’s needs and with major hubs in Box Hill and Eltham, these services can be delivered locally, in the Eastern and North Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
Why work with us?
Although our clients are at the heart of what we do and we strive to positively impact our communities and those who need it most, the wellbeing of our employees is just as important.
When joining healthAbility’s supportive, kind, caring and ethical culture, you are welcomed by multi-disciplinary teams passionate about the health and wellbeing of clients and communities, from prevention through to specialist care, and passionate about continually learning and building on their areas of expertise. We embrace this passion and are values driven, offering careers with meaning and environments that are flexible, evolving, creative and connected.
healthability is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We promote a workplace that actively seeks to include, welcome and value unique contributions of all people. This means we encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, people with disabilities, LGBTIQ+ and from culturally diverse backgrounds to apply for this job, with age being no barrier.
Job Description
The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Counsellor to join our supportive and professional multidisciplinary teams in a part time capacity.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to;
- Provide individual counselling and, where required, group-based therapeutic interventions within the service model and the counsellor’s professional scope of practice.
- Work within the scope and structure of the counselling program and therapeutic course of care for clients.
- Undertake timely risk and therapeutic assessments, collaborative goal setting, care planning, review and planned closure or referral as relevant.
- Use evidence-based and evidence-informed approaches responsive to presentations such as anxiety, depression, stress, grief and loss, trauma recovery, relationship and family concerns, chronic health-related distress, identity and life transitions.
- Provide family violence recovery counselling focused on safety, healing, empowerment and the impacts of violence; undertake family violence risk identification, assessment, safety planning, information sharing, referral and escalation in line with MARAM and relevant legislation, policies and role scope.
- Assess and respond to suicide, self-harm and other clinical risks within organisational procedures, consulting or escalating promptly when risk or complexity is outside role or service scope.
- Provide brief information, advocacy, warm referral and limited care coordination where this supports the counselling goals; the role does not provide ongoing case management or crisis family violence response.
- Work inclusively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, LGBTIQA+ people, people with disability and neurodivergent people, carers and others who may experience barriers to care.
- Collaborate with internal teams, referrers and external services, with client consent and in accordance with privacy and information-sharing requirements.
- Maintain accurate, timely and complete clinical records, outcome measures, client contacts and other required data in electronic systems.
- Manage an allocated caseload, appointment schedule and service targets, and communicate early where workload, risk or service barriers require support.
- Participate in clinical supervision, reflective practice, team meetings, professional development, mandatory training and wellbeing practices that support safe and sustainable clinical work.
- Contribute to service review, audits, client feedback and continuous quality improvement activities.
- Comply with professional standards, organisational policies, privacy, child safety, occupational health and safety, incident reporting and other relevant legislative requirements.
- Undertake other duties consistent with the role, classification, skills and experience.
Desired Skills and Experience
Skills & Experience
- A relevant tertiary qualification in counselling and/or social work.
- Current professional registration, accreditation or eligibility for membership with the relevant professional body, and capacity to maintain all ongoing requirements.
- Relevant counselling experience in community health, mental health, family violence, trauma recovery or a related setting.
- Current National Police Check and Working with Children Check, and evidence of the right to work in Australia.
