Director of Medical Services – Rural & Regional Health Services - Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD)
Are you a visionary clinical leader with a passion for rural and regional healthcare? HNELHD is seeking an exceptional Director of Medical Services (DMS) to provide expert leadership and shape the delivery of high-quality medical care across our Rural & Regional Health Services.
This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in influencing healthcare outcomes across a diverse and vibrant region—while enjoying the flexibility of a part-time executive role.

About the Role
As the Director of Medical Services, you will provide strategic and operational leadership for medical workforce and services across key district hospitals—Moree, Narrabri, Inverell, Glen Innes, and Gunnedah—as well as community sites in Wee Waa, Boggabri, Warialda, and Bingara.
You will be a valued member of the Rural & Regional Health Services (R&RHS) Executive Team, contributing to high-level decision-making and ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership: Lead and oversee medical workforce planning and service delivery, driving innovation and excellence across rural and regional settings.

Executive Collaboration: Work closely with the R&RHS General Manager and executive leadership to shape strategic priorities and future direction.

Clinical Governance & Culture: Champion the district’s vision of “Excellence, Every Patient, Every Time”, fostering a culture of accountability, inclusion, and continuous improvement.

Medical Leadership: Provide leadership, support, and professional oversight for Senior Medical Officers, ensuring high standards of clinical practice and engagement.

Service Development: Support sustainable, high-quality healthcare services tailored to the unique needs of rural communities.

  • A primary medical degree registrable with AHPRA and possession of relevant Fellowship and/or other specialist recognition and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
  • Strong, demonstrated leadership, analytical, liaison, negotiation and conflict resolution skills along with a demonstrated ability to develop, direct and lead multidisciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to quality improvement principles and innovation in clinical practice and proven track record of innovation and improvement in the interests of patients.
  • Proven track record of medical leadership in an environment of significant change and an ability to provide effective clinical leadership, negotiation and conflict resolution skills: ability to inspire others and build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of clinical practices and procedures and the ability to apply that knowledge to achieve high professional and clinical standards of care, efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of health services.
  • Understanding of, and strong commitment to the Values of HNE Health and knowledge of the Caring Together: Health Action Plan for NSW and other reform issues.
  • Ability to use and interpret data to address complex situations and make decisions that strategically align to patient outcomes and HNE Health objectives.
