The Legal team provides internal legal support, and coordinates external expertise where required, to assist the business in making informed commercial and corporate decisions.
Working under the direction of the Head of Legal and Compliance, the team supports business units by providing advice and guidance on legal matters, including commercial arrangements and contracts.
We offer flexible working arrangements and are open to considering both full-time and part-time candidates.
Your Role
- Provide support on legal and regulatory matters affecting Munich Re’s Australian and New Zealand operations.
- Provide timely and accurate legal advice to the business on allocated matters, including reinsurance, corporate and strategic initiatives and a focus on supporting the life insurance business unit, under the supervision and guidance of the Head of Legal & Compliance.
- Assist in the development and implementation of legal and compliance approaches and solutions to support business initiatives as directed.
- Support communication with external parties (including regulators, external counsel, and business partners) as required, under the direction of the Head of Legal & Compliance.
- Assist in the management of external legal advisers, including scoping, instructing and reviewing external legal advice.
- Draft, review, and assist in negotiating contracts, agreements, and other legal documents to help protect the company’s interests.
- Provide guidance and clarification on legal terminology and documentation to internal stakeholders.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Assist with the legal aspects of transactions and projects undertaken by the business, including conducting research and preparing supporting documentation.
- Contribute to the identification and escalation of legal risks, working with the Head of Legal to support appropriate risk management.
- Actively contribute to a collaborative and high-performing team culture that meets client, stakeholder, and employer expectations.
Your Profile
- Qualified lawyer with 4-7 years’ post-qualification experience (PQE), ideally gained at a mid/top-tier law firm and/or as an in-house legal counsel.
- Demonstrated experience: advising on reinsurance, general insurance, life insurance (strongly preferred), corporate/commercial law and regulatory compliance; drafting and reviewing commercial agreements such as insurance contracts and reinsurance treaties; conducting legal research and preparing advice; supporting senior lawyers and working within a legal team environment; assisting on transactions, projects and regulatory matters.
- Strong legal drafting and research skills.
- Ability to work effectively under supervision and take direction.
- Sound judgment with the ability to identify legal risks and escalate appropriately.
- Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail (essential).
