The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) is seeking a motivated and capable Paralegal to join its Information Access Unit. This team plays a vital role in supporting transparency, privacy and accountability across government by managing Freedom of Information (FOI) requests, providing privacy advice and coordinating Parliamentary orders to produce documents. This is a part-time (0.5 FTE), fixed-term opportunity until 30 June 2027. The role flexible with the opportunity to work both from home and from the office.

Reporting to the Manager, Information Access, you will join a high-performing and supportive team. Your contribution will provide you with case-management experience, experience working within a departmental Legal and Legislation Division and the opportunity to build skills liaising with policy divisions across DEECA. You will provide high-quality administrative and paralegal support, helping the department meet its legal and statutory obligations while contributing to work that has a meaningful impact on the Victorian community.
In this role, you will:
Provide legal research, administrative and systems support to help DEECA meet its statutory obligations under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 and the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 , as well as respond to Parliamentary orders for the production of documents.
Analyse FOI requests and coordinate internal briefing processes, including preparing clear and accurate briefing materials.
Prepare draft responses to FOI requests, initiate document searches and assist with document redaction under supervision.
Support the team’s operational work by coordinating responses to OVIC complaints and reviews, assisting with VCAT matters, and helping prepare reporting, education and training materials.
Identify and support continuous improvement opportunities that enhance service delivery and strengthen team performance.
About you
This role will suit someone who is collaborative, organised and eager to learn. You will bring strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills and sound legal research capability, along with the confidence to take initiative and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience providing high-quality project and/or administrative support, ideally in a legal, policy or government environment.
Current law students are strongly encouraged to apply.
Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications
Demonstrated experience in providing project and/or administrative support. Proven ability to manage priorities, clarify problems and identify solutions in a fast-paced working environment.
An understanding of government, departmental and Ministerial functions and processes is desirable.
Strong legal research skills.
This is a fixed term part time position at 0.5 FTE available for a period until 30 June 2027. The work location for this position is 2 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne with hybrid work arrangements available.
