Full job description

At ALS, we encourage you to dream big.

When you join us, you’ll be part of a global team harnessing the power of scientific testing and data-driven insights to build a healthier future.

Expression of Interest

We're always looking for talented people to join our Hydrographics team - submit your expression of interest today and we'll be in touch when the right opportunity arises!

About the Opportunity

Are you enthusiastic and eager to learn? Do you enjoy a work balance that is hands-on yet technical and science-oriented?

ALS Hydrographics is Australia's largest hydrographics team, and we're continually growing. We combine science, engineering, environmental monitoring, data management, and cutting-edge technology — and we want to hear from people who are excited by that.

By registering your expression of interest, you'll be considered for upcoming roles as they become available. Whether you're a trainee just starting out or an experienced professional looking for a change, we welcome your application — with full confidentiality guaranteed throughout the process.

The successful candidate will receive extensive in-house training and one on one mentoring as part of your career development plan:

  • Advanced Life Support First Aid course.

  • In house systems, equipment, and role specific technical training.

  • One-on-one mentoring.

  • Salary and role level tailored to your experience

  • High potential for international travel to remote Pacific Islands

What the Role Involves

This is a diverse and challenging role focused on the design, build, assembly, and configuration of environmental monitoring systems, supplied to ALS offices across Australia and directly to external clients — all with the support of a dedicated mentor.

Day-to-day responsibilities may include:

  • Design, manufacture, and testing of automated monitoring systems

  • Wiring, soldering, and assembly of terminals and 12V control panels

  • Producing and maintaining technical documentation

  • Providing technical support to field staff, project teams, and clients

  • General technical and administrative duties

  • Project management and procurement

  • Overseas travel for field installation of monitoring stations (for the right candidate)

What We're Looking For

We're open to candidates at a trainee to intermediate experience level. You don't need to tick every box — what matters most is your attitude, aptitude, and willingness to grow.

Essential:

  • Minimum Year 12 secondary education, with strengths in Science, English, and/or Mathematics

  • Competent computer skills with a practical and technical mindset

  • Strong work ethic, initiative, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to use hand and power tools to fabricate and fit out instrument panels

Highly Regarded:

  • Interest in telemetry communications — satellite, 4G, or IoT technologies

  • Interest or experience in datalogger coding/programming (e.g., CRBasic)

  • Experience using AutoCAD

  • Background in a similar workplace or industry

  • Relevant trade and/or tertiary qualification
