Job Title: Laboratory Technician

About Novalith

Novalith are a clean technology company enabling a decarbonised and electric future. We aim to do this by becoming the world's first low-cost & sustainable solution for lithium chemicals refining.

We are the perfect company for bright minds, innovators and those full of ambition. We're proud of what we've achieved thus far, but we have room for more like-minded individuals. If you're equally as passionate about a career in green/novel technology, and wanting to make a positive change in the world, what are you waiting for?

About the Opportunity

We are a rapidly growing scale-up focused on cleaner, more efficient lithium extraction, particularly the processing of Australian spodumene and other lithium containing materials. Sitting in the R&D team, the Research Assistant will partner closely with our Research Scientists, R&D Operations Manager and CTO on exciting projects to refine Novalith’s existing processes and develop our science further.

The ideal candidate should have relevant experience in a chemical, metallurgical, or mineral resources laboratory, knowledge of GLP and WHS, and possess excellent technical skills. This is a full-time position with opportunities for growth and learning in an exciting, young industry.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake and assist in the research, design, development and operation of the Company’s laboratory and pilot plant equipment, contributing to the development of Novalith’s technologies.
  • Assist in the design and setup of reactor systems, gas handling, concentration systems and related equipment.
  • Conduct laboratory tests and experiments to support our lithium-recovery process, following established protocols for sample preparation, analysis and data recording.
  • Operate laboratory equipment, ensuring proper functioning and calibration.
  • Assist in data analysis of analytical characterisation and experimental data, and maintain accurate records of results, observations, procedures and any deviations.
  • Conduct background research and literature reviews relating to projects.
  • Participate in fieldwork or pilot plant trials as needed.
  • Perform general support tasks including sourcing and updating materials inventory, equipment and supplies.
  • Prepare technical reports and present findings at internal company meetings.
  • Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot issues that arise during testing and assist in developing new testing methods or improvements to existing ones.
  • Promote a safe working environment by adhering to WHS regulations and taking responsibility for safe laboratory operations.

About the ideal Candidate

  • A University Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years’ relevant research assistant or chemical/metallurgical laboratory experience or equivalent.
  • Previous hands-on experience conducting experiments, troubleshooting and maintaining equipment.
  • Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), familiarity with Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) regulations, and an ability to promote a safe working environment.
  • Good knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics; experience with R&D commercialisation, mineral leaching and mineral carbonation is desirable.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 25 kg and torque bolts up to 65+ Nm when required for experimental setups or equipment maintenance tasks.
  • Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office and laboratory programs, with strong quantitative and analytical skills and good record keeping.
  • Class C NSW Driver’s License or equivalent.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment and autonomously, with strong attention to detail and excellent time management skills.
  • Enthusiasm for working within a multicultural team.

Job Details

  • Position type: Full-time, permanent.
  • Location: Alexandria, NSW (on-site).

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
  • Opportunity to work with a talented, experienced team of entrepreneurs and innovators.
  • Be part of a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Make a significant impact on the growth and success of a start-up company.
  • Rare opportunity to gain battery materials experience in a Sydney-based lab.
