Environmental Consultant - Monitoring, Impact Assessment and Compliance
Reports to: Managing Director
Proposed commencement: 02.09.2026
Applications close: 27.08.2026
The opportunity
Elk Fish Robotics is establishing an external Environmental Monitoring and Compliance consulting service for clients in Western Australia’s mining, resources, industrial and infrastructure sectors.
We are seeking an Environmental Consultant to design and lead environmental monitoring, impact-assessment and compliance programs for external clients.
The initial assignment will involve designing and leading an environmental monitoring, assessment and compliance program for a Western Australian resources client. The work will support the client’s environmental licences, approvals, management plans and regulatory obligations.
This is a professional environmental consultancy position. Its principal purpose is to analyse environmental information, assess actual and potential environmental impacts, advise clients and recommend practical management, mitigation and corrective measures.
Field sampling, laboratory coordination and the supervision of technicians and contractors are important supporting functions. They form part of the broader environmental assessment and advisory responsibilities of the position.
Key responsibilities
The Environmental Consultant will:
- Analyse and advise on the design, implementation and improvement of client environmental monitoring, assessment and compliance programs.
- Carry out or contribute to environmental impact assessments for development and operational activities.
- Identify actual and potential negative environmental impacts and recommend practical mitigation, management and corrective measures.
- Study and interpret environmental conditions using water, soil, sediment, mineral, microbiological and other relevant environmental information.
- Interpret environmental licences, approvals, management plans and regulatory obligations in the context of client operations.
- Advise external clients on environmental risks, monitoring results, regulatory compliance and environmental best practice.
- Develop scientifically defensible monitoring programs, management strategies, procedures and appropriate codes of practice.
- Plan field-sampling programs incorporating suitable quality-assurance and quality-control measures.
- Establish requirements for equipment calibration, contamination control, sample integrity, defensible field records and chain-of-custody management.
- Coordinate field personnel, laboratories, contractors and technical specialists.
- Analyse monitoring results, trends, anomalous findings and potential exceedances.
- Translate complex scientific findings into clear, practical recommendations for clients and non-specialist stakeholders.
- Conduct or support environmental audits, incident investigations and responses to spills or other environmental events.
- Prepare professional environmental assessments, monitoring reports, compliance reports, technical memoranda and regulatory submissions.
- Manage project plans, budgets, schedules, client communications and technical deliverables.
- Provide appropriate technical direction and supervision to field technicians, laboratories and contractors.
- Liaise professionally with clients, regulators, laboratories, contractors and other technical specialists.
Qualifications
Applicants must hold:
A bachelor’s degree or higher in environmental science, environmental engineering, ecology, conservation science, climate science, environmental policy and management, or another science discipline relevant to environmental consulting.
Experience and capabilities
Applicants must have:
- At least one year of post-qualification professional experience in environmental consulting, environmental impact assessment or closely related environmental advisory work.
- Professional experience involving environmental analysis and advice- not solely routine sample collection, laboratory testing or academic research.
- Experience assessing environmental impacts and recommending management, mitigation or corrective actions.
- Experience analysing environmental monitoring results and preparing professional reports.
- Experience providing environmental advice to external clients, industry bodies, regulators or other stakeholders.
- Experience coordinating monitoring programs, field personnel, laboratories or contractors.
- The ability to manage technical work independently and communicate effectively with clients.
- Strong written communication, analytical, project-management and organisational skills.
- The ability to explain complex scientific findings clearly to non-specialist stakeholders.
- The ability and willingness to undertake regional and remote fieldwork in Western Australia.
- A current driver’s licence recognised in Australia.
Experience in environmentally relevant microbiological monitoring, aseptic sampling, contamination control and interpretation of microbiological or water-quality results will be favourably regarded where relevant to client assignments.
Technology and systems
The position may require the use of:
- Experience using Google Workspace and Microsoft Office applications.
- ArcGIS or QGIS.
- GPS/GNSS and digital field-data collection systems.
- Environmental databases, laboratory information-management systems, electronic chain-of-custody platforms.
Applications
Please email to enviro@elkfishrobotics.com.au:
- A current CV.
- A cover letter addressing the qualifications, experience and capabilities required for the position.
Applications are welcomed from all suitably qualified candidates and will be assessed against the published requirements of the position.
