Position: Medical Trainee (Registrar)
Department: General Medicine
Location: Tweed Valley Hospital (primary) with rotation opportunities to Murwillumbah District Hospital & Byron Central Hospitals

The Role

The Tweed Valley Department of General Medicine is seeking dedicated Unaccredited Registrar. This rotational program offers four 3-month clinical terms annually, providing comprehensive experience across diverse medical specialities in a supportive learning environment.

Tweed Valley Hospital will be your primary site, and your rotations may include a 3-month placement in Byron Bay or Murwillumbah General Medicine units. We can be flexible to your needs and we'll discuss your preferences for rotations and facilities during the interview process, with final placements confirmed upon acceptance.

Available departments include:

  • General and Acute Medicine (Tweed Valley, Byron, Murwillumbah)
  • Haematology
  • Oncology
  • Renal
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Hospital in the Home
  • Relief (coverage across all departments, plus Cardiology & Palliative Care)

All registrars contribute equally to after-hours shifts and participate in a relief term, ensuring comprehensive exposure to our department's full scope.

About Tweed Valley Hospital

This is an exciting opportunity to join Tweed Valley Hospital, your primary work location and a new, major referral hospital at the heart of the network of hospitals and health facilities across the Tweed-Byron region, also including Murwillumbah District & Byron Central hospitals. The 723.3 million state-of-the-art hospital opened in May 2024 and will deliver additional health services and bed capacity to meet the growing community's healthcare needs.

Tweed Valley Hospital has:

  • currently 280 beds with capability to expand to 430 beds
  • expansive outpatient facilities with opportunity to increase available clinics
  • a developing interventional cardiology service
  • a fully capable emergency department with 42 treatment spaces
  • an integrated cancer care service with radiotherapy
  • 12 operating theatres

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the Unaccredited Trainee in General Medicine is to provide safe and high quality care, assess and manage, under supervision, Medical patients. The trainee needs to be aware of their limitations and work in a collegiate and collaborate manner.

Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
  • Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role (please address these in your response)
  • Adept ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise
  • Adept ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services
  • Proficient verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences
  • Sound ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management
  • Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of Adult Internal Medicine
