About the Opportunity
Sandvik provides comprehensive mining, excavation, rock processing, and metal-cutting solutions through innovation, digitalisation, and sustainable engineering. Our offerings include advanced ground support products like MD Bolts, fast cable anchors, injection chemicals and resins, digital monitoring devices such as X-Cell Cyclops and Professor.
This role joins our team within the Global Products Business Unit and is responsible for the development of innovative products and services for the mining and civil industries.
As a Geotechnical Research & Development Engineer, you will apply specialist geotechnical expertise across all stages of the product development lifecycle, from concept generation and research through to validation, commercialisation, and product launch. The role focuses on delivering customer-centric ground support and monitoring solutions that address evolving industry challenges while ensuring products meet Sandvik's technical, quality, safety, and performance standards. In addition, the position provides technical leadership for research programs, new product development initiatives, and strategic technology projects, contributing to commercially successful outcomes and the continued growth of the business.
Responsibilities

Act in full compliance with Sandvik’s Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Vision to achieve Zero Harm.

Promote and adhere to Sandvik’s EHS Policy, Procedures, and Framework.

Lead geotechnical research and development projects focused on innovative ground support products, technologies, and monitoring solutions.

Act as a technical authority on ground support performance, rock reinforcement, and geotechnical applications within underground mining environments.

Identify emerging industry challenges and technology trends and translate them into new product and technology development opportunities.
-
Design, manage and execute laboratory, surface and underground field trials to evaluate product performance and validate new technologies.
-
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Product Management, Operations, Manufacturing and Commercial functions to develop and commercialise new products.

Engage directly with customers and industry stakeholders to understand operational challenges and identify opportunities for innovation and product improvement.

Analyse geotechnical, test and field performance data to support technical decision-making, product optimisation and future technology development.
-
Build and maintain relationships with universities, research organisations and industry bodies to support collaborative research and innovation initiatives.

Prepare technical reports and present research outcomes through technical publications, conferences and industry forums.

Support Sandvik's innovation strategy through intellectual property development, technology roadmapping and the commercialisation of new ground support solutions.
About you
You are a degree-qualified Geotechnical Engineer, Mining Engineer, Geological Engineer, Geologist, or related professional with experience in underground mining and ground support systems who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and is motivated by the opportunity to turn innovative ideas into practical solutions.
With strong analytical and problem-solving skills, you can interpret geotechnical and operational data, communicate technical concepts effectively, and work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams. You are comfortable engaging with customers, research organisations, universities, and industry stakeholders, and are excited by the opportunity to influence the future of ground support technology through research, product development, field testing, and industry leadership.
You are naturally curious, commercially aware, and passionate about innovation, with a desire to see new ideas progress from concept through to real-world application. Whether working underground, in the laboratory, or alongside customers and industry partners, you are driven to deliver practical solutions that improve safety, productivity, and performance.
