  • Grade 1 Medical Scientist - Biochemistry (Grade 2 with the appropriate level of experience)
  • Full-time, fixed-term role (parental leave backfill, 12 months)
  • 10 shifts / 76 hours - per fortnight – 1.0 FTE

About Biochemistry
The Biochemistry department is committed to promoting the highest levels of quality pathology services to the Austin hospital and surrounding health care facilities.
Working as a reference laboratory for regional sites, the Heidelberg laboratory receives samples from many different specialities including maternity and neonates, liver and kidney transplantation, haematology and oncology and the emergency department.

About the role
Reporting to the Principal Scientist, as a Grade 1 or Grade 2 Medical Scientist you will work within our biochemistry laboratory as part of the biochemistry team, who are passionate about providing best practice care for our patients.

A regular day will see you:
  • Ensuring the smooth running of the biochemistry analysers throughout the day, including maintenance and running / checking QC
  • Validating biochemistry tests
  • Liaising with lab staff, clinical staff, couriers, Chemical Pathology registrars and Chemical Pathologists, in person and on the phone
  • This role requires working 10 shifts per fortnight as part of the biochemistry shift roster

A Grade 2 position may be considered with the appropriate level of experience.

About you
You will be someone who has excellent communication skills and a commitment to quality in our biochemistry laboratory. You will bring energy and drive to your work and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.

To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • A Batchelor of Laboratory Medicine or equivalent and/or relevant science degree
  • Knowledge of Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with colleagues including nursing and medical staff
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team
  • The ability to prioritise and to cope with stressful and emergency situations
  • Ability to cope with change
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts including weekends and night shifts
