As a Barge Deckhand at InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef, you’ll be right in the heart of our island operation, working hands-on to keep essential supplies, equipment and cargo moving safely and efficiently. This is more than just a deckhand role it’s a chance to showcase your marine skills, work alongside an awesome team and experience island life in one of Australia’s most breathtaking destinations. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Assisting the vessel Master to ensure the vessel is operated safely and efficiently and is presented to its best possible standard.

• Undertake a key role in vessel emergency and evacuation procedures as defined for each individual vessel.

• Inspect safety equipment and report any deficiencies to the Master.

• Participate in safety drills and demonstrations to meet legislative requirements.

• Assist the Master in the maintenance of the decks and exterior of the vessel.

• Assist Master in the safe navigation of the vessel in adverse conditions.

• Assist in Bridge Management and look-out duties as prescribed by the Master to ensure safe navigation.

This is an off-island based position. You will be based on the Mainland not on Hayman island.

Base rate $37.74 + penalties + loading

To be successful in this role, you’ll have:

• Valid coxswain G3 ticket or higher

• Current Advanced First Aid and CPR Certificate

• Elements of Shipboard Safety

• Marine Radio Operations Certificate (preferred)

• Able to travel on boats without sea sickness

• Communication skills - guests will need to come to you with concerns as well as compliments, so you’ll be easy to talk to

• Your problem-solving skills will turn issues into opportunities so every guest leaves with great memories

• Experience - ideally you’ll have spent at least one year in a similar position
