About the Service

The establishment of Safe Spaces is one of eight key initiatives that comprise the Towards Zero Suicides Initiative.
Safe Spaces will provide support and referrals to people who present to the service experiencing suicidal thinking. They will provide an alternative to presenting to an emergency or to remaining in an emergency department unnecessarily. The district has been allocated two Safe Spaces, one in Griffith and one in Wagga Wagga.


What you’ll be doing

Appropriately share one's personal lived experience and support people who access the service to be actively involved in their own care through providing and explaining information about rights and responsibilities, how to navigate the service as well as providing other information and support as appropriate to their individual needs of the client.
Key responsibilities:

  • Provide recovery-oriented and trauma-informed peer support for people who present to the service

  • Provide psychosocial support, safety planning and recovery/wellness planning

  • Deliver individual or group peer support, advocacy and follow up support to access other services

  • Work in a manner that aligns with the principles of step up/step down care. This includes making referrals to a range of community-based services for ongoing support if required (step down), or escalating concerns over consumer wellbeing to clinical staff/management within the Safe Space and/or outreach teams for follow up (step up)

  • Liaise with, and possibly work, from emergency departments to ensure people in distress are successfully linked to the service and that emergency department staff have a high awareness of the service.

  • After hours and weekend work will be a requirement of the role




Candidates will be required to meet the following criteria:

  • Certificate IV Peer Work or ability to enroll and complete the CERT IV within 18 months or an Australian recognised Health related qualification

  • Lived Experience Expertise of a suicidal crisis

  • NSW Working with children clearance

  • Compliance with Vaccination category A

  • Current driver’s licence and willingness to travel as required
