Position Classification: Post Graduate Fellow
Employment Type: Temporary Full Time
Hours Per Week: up to 40
Duration: up to 12 months from commencement in February 2027
Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship prior to or within 3 months after the advertised contract commencement date will be considered. For applicants without Fellowship there is potential to commence as Provisional Fellow under the Public Hospital Medical Officers Award (Registrar 4th year) and on successful attainment of Fellowship transition to a Post Graduate Fellow.
Who we are : We are a health service that touches thousands of lives across the Northern Sydney Local Health District, together as a team of like-minded people. We are passionate, driven and have the skills and knowledge to care for our patients whilst creating the best services possible. Our teams have meaningful, interesting and rewarding work every day. We challenge and nurture each other, sharing our knowledge and experience so that we can deliver better care for everyone. There's a real sense of belonging here because we value and respect our patients, employees, and teams' voices. You'll feel a real privilege being a trusted caregiver in our patients, their families, their carers, and our communities' lives.
About the Role
The post graduate fellow does not fulfil the same duties as a specialist, it is a transition position between fellow medical practitioners into specialist roles via a short period of supervision. The post graduate fellow does not exercise independent clinical privileges and is supervised by a specialist medical officer at all times including periods of on-call. The level of supervision is commensurate to their level of experience.
The position fulfils the requirement for accreditation with the conjoint committee for INR accreditation, ccinr.org.au (although noting 2 years of fellowship are required for CCINR accreditation and this position is advertised yearly). Also to be noted CCINR will only recognise training that has commenced after attainment of fellowship of the relevant college.
RNSH is one of two foundation INR unit in Australia, being part of the Initial federal funding grant in 1992. In 2004 RNSH was funded through the state government as one of two INR centres in NSW, which included the formalisation of this fellowship position. In 2008 a dedicated INR theatre was opened at Westmead Hospital. This unit operates equally across RNSH and Westmead campuses.
There is a long history of research and publications arising from this unit. The successful applicant is expected to produce at least one peer review publication per year. We are proud of our innovations; including the first stent assisted coiling in the world, and the first mechanical thrombectomy for large vessel occlusive stroke in Australia (and we are told second in the world). Last year about 1400 neuroendovascular procedures were performed by the four INR consultants (in public and private), with 550 of these being interventions.
Purpose of the Position
You will provide care and treatment of patients, as a delegate of the specialist medical officer involved in the management of the patient, as part of a multidisciplinary team in a Northern Sydney Local Health District facility or service. This care will be provided within the scope of clinical practice endorsed by the NSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.
The position will provide clinical consultation services within NSLHD and will contribute to the teaching and training of medical students, graduates and other health care professionals and to research, evaluation and quality improvement activities within NSLHD.
This position is temporary with the possibility of temporary extension based on performance, funding and need
