High Stakes. High Impact. High Support.
Step into one of the busiest and most dynamic Emergency Departments in NSW, where no two shifts are the same, and every day offers opportunities to learn, grow, and make a real difference.
At John Hunter Hospital, Emergency Medicine trainees are immersed in a world-class clinical environment, working alongside leading specialists in a supportive and structured training network.
Why Choose John Hunter Hospital?
John Hunter Hospital is the major trauma, tertiary referral, and paediatric centre for the Hunter New England region. With over 90,000 presentations annually, including complex trauma, medical, surgical, toxicology, and paediatric cases, you’ll gain exposure to the full spectrum of Emergency Medicine at a scale and depth few other hospitals can match.
Highlights include:
- Level 1 Trauma Centre – one of the busiest in Australia, and the only major trauma centre outside the Sydney Metro area.
- Tertiary-level exposure to trauma, cardiac, neurosurgical, paediatric, and critical care presentations.
- Integrated Paediatric Emergency Department with ready access to on-site sub-specialty support.
- High acuity and volume, offering unmatched opportunities to hone procedural and resuscitation skills.
- Strong teaching culture, with DEMTs, FACEMs, and senior registrars committed to your development.
- Future-focused facilities – a brand-new Acute Services Building is currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2026, further expanding state-of-the-art training and clinical opportunities.
Your Training Experience
As a trainee at JHH, you’ll be part of Network 4, an established ACEM-accredited program designed to support success at every stage of training.
You’ll have access to:
- A structured curriculum for TS1–TS4 trainees.
- Intensive exam support for Primary, Written, and OSCE assessments.
- Regular simulation training, including trauma, paediatrics, and high-fidelity scenarios.
- Protected weekly network teaching sessions.
- Opportunities to rotate through ICU, retrieval medicine, and sub-specialties across the district.
Who Should Apply?
This placement is perfect for Emergency Medicine trainees who are:
- Seeking exposure to high-acuity, complex cases in a major trauma and referral centre.
Train where the stakes are high, the learning is endless, and the support is real.
Experience Emergency Medicine at John Hunter Hospital.
Big Cases. Bold Learning. Boundless Support.
