Clinical Genetics - Advanced Trainee - Liverpool Hospital, SWSLHD

Liverpool Hospital is recruiting for an Advanced Trainee to complement and enhance the current Clinical Genetics Department.

Where You'll Be Working

Liverpool Hospital, founded in 1813, is the major health service for south-western Sydney, providing services to the local government area of Liverpool City Council as well as district services to residents and visitors in the area. It also provides a range of state-wide services in areas such as critical care and trauma, neonatal intensive care and brain injury rehabilitation.

The Hospital provides a health service of international standing, with 23 operating theatres, capacity for 877 beds, diagnostic and imaging services, emergency and trauma care, maternity, paediatric, cancer care, mental health, ambulatory care, allied health and medical and surgical services from birth to aged care.

Liverpool Hospital is currently undergoing a major redevelopment. The $790 million Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct (LHAP) project will provide enhanced facilities and an increased capacity to meet future significant population growth for South Western Sydney.

Liverpool Hospital is a principal referral and teaching Hospital of the University of NSW and the Western Sydney University and also welcome students from over 20 universities and colleges.

What you'll be doing

This short term position is available to Advanced Trainees or Provisional Advanced Trainees of the College of Physicians in Paediatrics, Adult Medicine or equivalent recognised colleges in Australasia or overseas. Applications are welcomed from those who are interested in shorter period of clinical training.

Particular strengths of this position include involvement in reproductive and fetal genetics, paediatric genetics, adult neurogenetics and cardiovascular genetics, as well as the genetic disorders of various NSW ethnic communities including thalassaemia.

The Advanced Trainee will be involved in all areas of clinical service provision under the supervision of a Clinical Geneticist. Participation in some metropolitan outreach clinics and in specialised genetics clinics will be arranged as part of the trainees' program.

The Advanced Trainee will be an active participant in educational activities and will work with the Director of Physician Training to participate in the physician training program in regards to genetics.
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Completion of at least four postgraduate years and successful completion of the examination requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or equivalent, and be eligible to undertake subspecialty training in (Clinical Genetics) in Australia.
  • 3 – 6 months experience in relevant subspecialty or equivalent preferable (e.g. Neurology, Endocrinology).
  • Completion of mandatory training as required by RACP or equivalent (if applicant registered with RACP) preferable.
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with other health professionals.
  • Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development and demonstrated ability to teach, with a willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff.
  • Understanding of research methodology or research experience and a willingness to be involved in research projects.
