What you'll be doing

The vision for South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) is ‘exceptional care, healthier lives’. SESLHD is committed to enabling our community to be healthy and well, and to providing the best possible compassionate care when people need it.

The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical assessment and management of patients requiring specialised Hand Surgery treatment, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in orthopaedic surgical practice in a complex clinical environment.

The Orthopaedic Unaccredited Trainee works closely with consultants and members of a multi-disciplinary team, contributing to patient care across inpatient, outpatient and emergency settings, and managing clinical matters with discretion, sensitivity and professionalism.

Decision making and level of supervision will be commensurate with the trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. The trainee is expected to progressively develop greater independence in patient management under the guidance of the responsible Consultant. All patient care is provided under the direction of a specialist medical practitioner, with clear communication regarding clinical decisions.
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • Completion of at least three postgraduate years working full time as a medical officer in a clinical environment in a recognized hospital institution equivalent to the Australian health care system.
  • Proven experience of at least one rotation (10 weeks) in Orthopaedic surgery in the previous 24 months.
  • Evidence of teaching and research in orthopaedics and supervision of junior medical officers.
  • Demonstrated good organisational, time management skills and commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  • Demonstrated teamwork, ability to work independently and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to ongoing learning.
