The Public and Environmental Health Reference (PEHR) Laboratories perform public health surveillance, outbreak response and analysis for diseases, vectors and environmental contaminants which are of public health importance.

About the role:
As a Senior Scientist, you will initiate, supervise and manage focused research, development and validation activities both internal and external for the Virology Laboratory as required by the Chief Scientist, Public Health Virology. You will also contribute and participate in routine testing as and when required. Provide mentoring and supervision of staff as required and provide authoritative professional and technical advice and guidance to staff, students and visitors involved in molecular virology and/or viral immunology based research, development and validation.

Your key responsibilities include:
Provide management functions for research and development activities as delegated by the Chief Scientist, Public Health Virology.
Coordinate the review and curation of Public Health Virology assays for suitability and performance in aligned with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
Develop and implement new research, validation and development initiatives as required.
Provide advanced professional and technical advice and services on all aspects of virology research and development activities including viral immunology and molecular virology.
Maintain skills and keep abreast of new developments and technological innovations by surveillance of current scientific literature, attendance at scientific meetings and educational courses.

Role fit:
You will bring extensive expertise in molecular and genomic techniques applied within a public health virology setting, with a strong understanding of their role in supporting public health surveillance, investigations and diagnostic services. You will have the capability to lead and undertake advanced research and development activities in viral immunology and molecular virology, contributing to innovative solutions and improved public health outcomes. Your knowledge of the operational, research and accreditation requirements of a statewide public health virology laboratory will enable you to support high-quality tertiary-level services across areas such as arboviral, emerging viral, rickettsial, and food and waterborne viral diseases. You will also demonstrate the ability to analyse, interpret and communicate scientific findings through reports, publications and presentations, while leveraging highly developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills to build and lead scientific collaborations and networks at local, national and international levels.
