We are pleased to confirm that in 2027 Avant Law will be offering a Graduate Program which includes an on-site 18 week Practical Legal Training (“PLT”) program in partnership with The College of Law for three law graduates across Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. This will be a 12 month fixed term contract with rotations across four different practice areas.
Position Overview
We are seeking one motivated Graduate Lawyer to join our team in Melbourne. This program will combine an 18 week PLT with the College of Law with real responsibility and autonomy working at Avant Law providing an excellent opportunity for professional development in a dynamic legal environment.
Avant Law (Medical Indemnity) is Australia’s largest specialist medico-legal law firm. Over 12 months, you will have the opportunity to rotate every three months through a range of different practice areas including:
  • Civil litigation (claims for compensation against Avant members)
  • Professional conduct claims (i.e. Medical Board investigations, coronial inquiries, Medicare)
  • Workplace Law
Avant Law (Commercial) provides tailored legal advice to Australian practitioners and other clients each year. You will have the opportunity to rotate through two of these practice areas:
  • Commercial and Corporate advisory
  • Estate Planning and Probate
  • Employment and Workplace
  • Property
The key responsibilities include:
This role will see you deliver high quality, timely legal advice and services in respect of claims and complaints against Avant’s members and providing legal advice to Avant Law (Commercial) clients, including:
  • Assisting lawyers with legal research and case preparation.
  • Drafting legal documents, including briefs, memos, court documents and contracts.
  • Conducting legal research and analysis on various issues.
  • Reviewing and summarising case files and legal materials.
  • Attending client meetings, court hearings, and other legal proceedings as required.
  • Providing administrative support such as managing case files and coordinating with clients.
  • Staying updated on legal developments and changes in the law.
Who is this program suitable for?
At the time of applying, you have completed or are in your final semester of study at an Australian university and will have completed your degree by the end of 2026.
You will be able to commence Practical Legal Training in February 2027 following which you will be eligible for admission as a Solicitor in the relevant jurisdiction.

You have the following attributes:
  • The ability to express ideas effectively with proven excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of prioritisation, time management and self-management skills.
  • A willingness to learn and take on board feedback.
  • Works collaboratively and constructively to support a positive team culture.
  • Excellent computer literacy and competency to work in an electronic document management environment.
  • A demonstrated interest in the medico-legal/health law sector is preferred.
