The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a valued member of the Criminal Law Practice, you’ll provide high-quality legal and administrative support to the Court of Criminal Appeal team, ensuring matters progress efficiently and clients receive culturally respectful support. Working collaboratively with Solicitors and stakeholders, you’ll contribute to effective service delivery and access to justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. Each day, you will:
- Provide high-quality legal and administrative support to the Court of Criminal Appeal practice, including preparing legal documents, managing files, coordinating briefs, and assisting Solicitors with court-related matters.
- Manage case administration and practice systems by maintaining calendars, mailboxes, databases and records, ensuring matters are accurately updated and progress efficiently.
- Support client and stakeholder communication by liaising with clients, families, Counsel, Public Defenders, Legal Aid, Court staff and other agencies while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.
- Assist with court preparation and legal processes including obtaining court records and transcripts, preparing briefs of evidence, subpoenas, affidavits, reports and other documentation.
- Maintain compliance, ethical practice and continuous improvement by adhering to ALS policies, WHS requirements and participating in training and professional development.
- Work collaboratively with legal, administrative and community teams while respecting Aboriginal cultural practices and supporting culturally appropriate service delivery.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated Paralegal who brings strong organisational skills, legal knowledge and a deep commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. You understand the importance of culturally respectful legal services and provide high-quality administrative and legal support that helps advance access to justice within the Court of Criminal Appeal practice. Key strengths include:
- Formal paralegal qualifications or progress towards a law degree, with an understanding of legal processes and the criminal justice system.
- Knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, communities and support services, with a commitment to culturally respectful service delivery.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to liaise professionally with clients, legal professionals, courts, government and community organisations.
- Excellent organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, maintain accurate records and support a high-volume workload with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a legal team, coordinate services, solve problems and contribute to effective practice operations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and compliance requirements, including maintaining confidentiality, holding or obtaining relevant checks, and a current NSW/ACT driver’s licence.
