Full job description
Launch your legal career with hands-on experience supporting governance, privacy and compliance.
The Role
As a Legal Cadet, you will be part of the Corporate Governance and Risk team, providing high-quality research and administrative support across a range of legal and governance activities. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in a local government environment while building your legal knowledge.
You will support work related to access to information applications, internal privacy reviews, and insurance claims. This will include conducting research, preparing summaries, and assisting with the coordination of responses in line with legislative and policy requirements.
In this role, you will also assist with policy development and maintenance, as well as the upkeep of public disclosure registers. You will help ensure information is accurate, current, and compliant with statutory obligations.
You will work closely with experienced professionals, receiving guidance, mentoring, and exposure to a range of legal and governance matters. You will build your understanding of legislative frameworks and how they apply in practice within a public sector setting.
Key Accountabilities:
- Provide legal and administrative support to the Access to Information team, including GIPA applications and information requests.
- Assist with interpreting and applying relevant legislation, including the GIPA Act, PPIP Act, and Local Government Act.
- Conduct legal research, review evidence, and prepare summaries to support decision-making.
- Draft basic correspondence, reports, and governance documentation under supervision.
- Support the maintenance of governance registers, including the GIPA Disclosure Log and records management systems.
- Ensure confidential and sensitive information is managed appropriately and in line with policy requirements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of governance processes and the Corporate Governance Framework.
What We Are Looking For
You are a motivated law student with a strong interest in governance, privacy, and public sector law. You are eager to learn, develop practical skills, and apply your knowledge in a real-world setting.
You will have:
- Currently studying towards completion of a legal qualification.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to apply sound judgement.
- Good organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
- Ability to undertake legal research and assist with preparing correspondence, reports and documentation.
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
What We Offer
- Salary from $56,710.35 to 64,964.80 gross p.a. (full time equivalent), plus 12% superannuation
- This is a temporary part-time position for a maximum period of two years, or until the completion of the employee's studies, whichever occurs first
