Penguin Specialist
$29.48 per hour | Part Time
Sea World, Oxenford, Gold Coast
The Opportunity
Step into a cool career at Sea World! As a Penguin Specialist, you’ll help care for Sea World’s seabirds, from the Sub-Antarctic King and Gentoo Penguins to the Little Blue Penguins, and Australian Pelicans too. From animal training and husbandry to enrichment and exhibit maintenance, you’ll play a key role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our seabirds.
Key Responsibilities
From snowy exhibit care to penguin enrichment, you’ll be waddling through a role that’s full of variety. You’ll:
  • Assist with presentation standards of Penguin Encounter, Penguin Point and the Bird Rehabilitation exhibits including snow blows, ice cleaning and removal.
  • Develop an understanding of animal training and conditioning techniques and behavioral enrichment to maintain appropriate behavioral management of the seabirds.
  • Perform relevant education talks and interactive tours to provide an educational experience to guests and students.
What We’re Looking For
Think you’ve got what it takes to care for our coolest residents? Here’s what you’ll bring to the colony:
  • Previous experience with preventive health, behavioral management, enrichment and husbandry of birds is desirable.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification or Certificate III in Wildlife and Exhibited Animal Care, or substantial demonstrated experience in a comparable role is essential.
  • Able to work in cool environments ranging from -1.0C to +4.0C.
  • A level of fitness required to complete all tasks in the assigned area.
  • Available to work on any day including weekends.
  • Blue Card is essential* (Please be advised that the cost of a Blue Card is currently $108.30).
Candidates who progress through the first and second round interviews will be required to complete both (a) a Fitness for Work Assessment and (b) a Psychometric Assessment (DISC). These assessments are conducted at VRTP’s expense and form part of the overall recruitment process.
