Full job description
About the role:
As a Medical Laboratory Scientist, you will work as a team member in the Histology Section providing a comprehensive histology service to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, the Queensland Children's Hospital as well as a central support and referral service to laboratories throughout Queensland.
The role is predominately based in the Molecular Morphology laboratory, which performs a range of specialised testing such as immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridisation (CISH, SISH and FISH) and enzyme histochemistry and houses the statewide PQ FISH and neuropathology services. The position also supports the broader work performed in the Histology lab.
Key responsibilities include:
Apply independent scientific judgement in the analysis of patient specimens leading to the verification and validation of test results and the provision of advice to the clinical unit where appropriate.
Undertake diagnostic testing and related duties in Histology and the Molecular Morphology Section following Pathology Queensland established accredited protocols and standards in accordance with prescribed professional and ethic standards.
Provide input in the development of scientific practices, procedures and protocols and contribute to research activities within the Molecular Morphology Section.
Participate in quality and service improvement activities to continually improve patient care.
Work cooperatively and communicate effectively within Histology, the Molecular Morphology Section, the Division and with clients, both internal and external to the laboratory.
The Molecular Morphology Laboratory is part of the Anatomical Pathology Department which currently operates Monday to Friday 05:30 - 23:00 and Saturdays 06:00 - 15:30. You may be required to participate in a range of rosters during these operational hours and may be required to work on Saturdays and perform overtime where required to meet service delivery requirements.
About you:
You will bring strong knowledge of histology and its application within a diagnostic laboratory environment, with demonstrated experience across a broad range of histological techniques including embedding, specimen dissection, microtomy, routine and complex special stains, and urgent frozen section protocols. Experience, or the ability to rapidly develop expertise, in specialised testing methods such as immunohistochemistry, fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH), neurohistochemistry, muscle biopsy handling and enzyme histochemistry will be highly regarded. You will be a collaborative team member with excellent communication skills, capable of meeting critical deadlines while exercising sound judgement and independent decision-making in workflow management and the provision of clinical advice within your scope of practice. With strong attention to detail, troubleshooting and multitasking abilities, you will contribute to quality and service improvements in accordance with NATA/ISO accreditation standards and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to continuing professional development and participation in rostered service requirements.
