About the Role

Reporting to the Medical Director and providing collaborative medical support to Consulting Psychiatrists, the position is responsible for the clinical assessment, management, and ongoing care of patients admitted to the inpatient mental health unit, working closely with consultant psychiatrists, junior doctors, nursing staff, and allied health and other professionals within a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Participation in the provision of mental health service as under the Aegis Health Medical Practitioner By-Laws. Promote the organisational culture and principles of person-centred, equitable, trauma informed and recovery focussed service delivery.

The position will require some after-hours commitments based on patient clinical needs. Initially a commitment of up to 20 hours a week on a flexible basis will be required. There will be a future opportunity to increase hours in the near future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Works within the multidisciplinary team and undertakes the assessment and ongoing management of patients with psychiatric disorders to include case management, reporting and liaison with team members, the patient’s General Practitioner and other key stakeholders.
  • Provides continuity of care from the community to the inpatient setting.
  • Liaises and consults regularly with Consultant Psychiatrists, Medical Officers, Nursing and Allied Health Professionals, General Practitioners and other service providers regarding patient management.
  • Participate in continuous safety and quality improvement activities including regular peer review, clinical incident reporting, investigations and the development and monitoring of quality assurance measures and activities

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Qualified as a MBBS or equivalent
  • Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Substantial clinical experience in mental health domains
  • Demonstrated clinical skills and relevant experience working with patients from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds with mental health problems
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated effective organisation and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing quality improvement.
  • Ability to work under the direction and supervision of a Consultant Psychiatrist.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Mental Health Act and other related legislation
  • Committed to a professional career in a medical discipline such as Psychiatry, General Medicine or General Practice
