Applications are invited from ACPSEM-certified/accredited Medical Physicists for a temporary Medical Physics Specialist position within the Radiation Oncology Department, SWSLHD Cancer Services.
The position is for an initial 12-month period, with the potential for extension, and will primarily support Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre (MCTC), Campbelltown Hospital. The role may also require occasional travel to Liverpool Cancer Therapy Centre (LCTC) to support service requirements, education, training and departmental activities.
This is an opportunity to join a progressive Medical Physics service with a strong focus on clinical excellence, advanced radiotherapy technology, innovation and applied research. The position offers a broad clinical scope together with opportunities to contribute to technology implementation, service development and research, supported by flexible work arrangements.
About the Medical Physics service
The SWSLHD Cancer Services Medical Physics Department comprises 18 Medical Physics Specialists and three Medical Physics Registrars working across MCTC and LCTC, with strong links to the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research and affiliated universities.
Medical Physics Specialists contribute across the full range of radiation oncology physics activities. The service has established VMAT and SBRT programs and is actively expanding its use of advanced treatment, imaging and verification technologies.
Medical Physics is integrated into multidisciplinary treatment site groups, providing opportunities to contribute directly to clinical practice development and implementation.
The department lead and contribute major clinical trials also has an active clinical research program, with opportunities to collaborate with Medical Physics researchers, clinicians, postgraduate students, universities and industry partners.
About Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre
Campbelltown Hospital is a major teaching and tertiary referral hospital serving the South Western Sydney region.
Macarthur Cancer Therapy Centre commenced operation in 2002 and provides comprehensive radiation oncology services supported by advanced radiotherapy, imaging and treatment planning technologies. Current equipment includes:
- Three Elekta Versa HD linear accelerators, including Hexapod positioning, Automated Breath Control (ABC), Brainlab ExacTrac Dynamic and surface guidance
- X-Strahl orthovoltage unit•Philips Brilliance Big Bore CT simulator

RayStation treatment planning system•Comprehensive dosimetry equipment and software
- Two existing Elekta linear accelerators at MCTC are scheduled to be replaced with Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators, incorporating HyperSight imaging capability and ExacTrac surface guidance. Installation of the first system is scheduled to commence in November 2026.
- The existing Philips Brilliance Big Bore CT simulator is scheduled to be replaced by a Siemens SOMATOM CT simulator in early 2027.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to contribute to the commissioning and clinical implementation of these new systems.
Selection Criteria
To help us assess your suitability for the role, please tell us as much as you can about yourself in response to the questions below.
- A Bachelors degrees in physics, medical physics or equivalent discipline from a tertiary institution in Australia or equivalent from overseas per ACPSEM Skills Assessment.
- A postgraduate degree in physics, medical physics or equivalent discipline from a tertiary institution in Australia or equivalent from overseas (per ACPSEM Skills Assessment).
- Certification in Radiation Oncology Medical Physics or Radiotherapy Equipment Commissioning and Quality Assurance from the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM) . International candidates eligible for registration by the ACPSEM and candidates who have completed the ACPSEM Training Education and Assessment Program (TEAP) written exam and expect to be certified within 6 months can also apply.
- Significant experience in radiation oncology physics and a demonstrated ability to achieve high standards of professional practice, along with evidence of a track record in commissioning radiotherapy equipment and/or implementation of new technologies.
- Evidence of initiative and ability to prioritise amongst competing service requirements, and willing to work flexible work hours (early or late) at times, as required.
