This role involves performing routine diagnostic laboratory tests according to established protocols to support patient care within Monash Health Pathology services. The position works under the supervision of a Principal Scientist and contributes to accurate, timely pathology results. Key aspects include:
Laboratory testing: Performing haematology analyses in line with established protocols
Morphology expertise: Demonstrated experience in blood film morphology, including identification and reporting of abnormalities
Quality & safety: Adhering to quality assurance, control procedures, and safety standards
Equipment & processes: Maintaining instruments, handling specimens and escalating abnormal or unexpected results
Teamwork & communication: Working collaboratively with laboratory teams and contributing to efficient service delivery
Flexibility: Availability for casual rotating roster across haematology services
About the Department / Program
Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a formal partnership to deliver a Shared Pathology Service as one of two pathology networks for metropolitan Melbourne. All roles in the Pathology Programs are working to develop the Partnership and ensure we continue to provide high quality care for the patients across the health services.
Monash Health Pathology is an integral part of Monash Health. It is the largest public provider of Pathology services in the state and currently operates 6 laboratories. The largest of these is located at the Monash Medical Centre, Clayton, with additional laboratories located at the Dandenong, Moorabbin, Casey, Victorian Heart Hospital and Wonthaggi Hospitals. There are currently 18 collection locations based within the hospital sites and community settings. Services are provided to the Public and Private sectors, and other laboratory services.
About the Role
Join the Monash Health Pathology team as a Medical Scientist Grade 1 within Haematology. In this role, you will work under the guidance of the Principal Scientist and collaborate closely with the broader multidisciplinary laboratory team across the Central Laboratory.
The role focuses on delivering high-quality diagnostic services including routine haematology testing, transfusion testing and blood product support, and blood film morphology assessment, ensuring accurate and timely results to support patient care. You will perform laboratory testing in accordance with established protocols, carry out quality control procedures, and maintain laboratory equipment and processes.
The Medical Scientist is responsible for ensuring the quality and safety of results at the point of care, recognising and escalating abnormal findings and contributing to continuous quality improvement initiatives.
This role requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with strong analytical skills, attention to detail and effective communication. A commitment to professional development, flexibility to work rostered and after hours shifts, and the ability to manage a varied workload in a fast-paced environment are essential.
Experience in blood film morphology is highly valued, supporting accurate interpretation and reporting within haematology services.
The role is a 24/7 rotational position with shifts that include day, early, afternoon, evening, overnight and weekend shifts. Particiaption in the on call roster.
About You
To be successful in this healthcare role, you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience, and attributes:
Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical Laboratory Science) or recognised equivalent is essential
Demonstrated experience or strong interest in haematology laboratory testing, including routine analysis and workflows
Demonstrated experience or strong interest in transfusion science, including testing and blood product support.
Proven experience in blood film morphology and the ability to accurately identify and interpret abnormal findings (highly regarded)
Sound knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, quality control, and quality assurance procedures
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organisational skills with high attention to detail
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively liaise with staff at all levels
Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet clinical turnaround times
