Advanced Trainee, Paediatrics
Lismore Base Hospital & Richmond Network



Apply now for a Paediatric Medicine Advanced Training position at the Lismore Base Hospital and its peripheral sites (Ballina and Casino Hospitals) for the 2027 clinical year. The successful applicants will gain valuable experience in our hospitals and clinics, working under the guidance of highly experienced senior clinicians.

The position supports meeting the requirements for Paediatric training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.



Where you'll be working
The Paediatric ward provides a Level 4 Paediatric service to patients aged from birth to 16 and up to 18 years in some instances, depending on presenting illness and history. The ward admits patients living within the Richmond/Clarence catchment area.

The unit is staffed by specialist Paediatric Nurses and Paediatricians and works with allied health professionals who provide additional support services.

Our services include:

  • Medical patients: respiratory, gastrointestinal, seizure disorders, feeding problems, meningitis/encephalitis, minor cardiac problems, endocrine disorders, metabolic disorders, skin infections/disorders, autoimmune disorders, mental health stabilisation, and eating disorders.
  • Surgical patients: ENT, Orthopaedic, hernia’s and related conditions, emergency surgery, infections and abdominal surgery, trauma care, head injury, and minor burns.

Lismore Base Hospital (LBH) is the recognised Trauma Centre for the North Coast Region and is linked with the local helicopter retrieval service.

The hospital is an acute regional referral hospital of 280 beds on the Far North Coast of NSW, serving a population of approximately 170,000 people on the Far North Coast of NSW and has a busy Emergency Department (40,000 presentations annually), ICU and Coronary Care Unit, as well as Surgery (general, orthopaedic and speciality surgery), Paediatrics, Mental Health, and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

LBH is an affiliated teaching hospital for medical students from the University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, University of Western Sydney and Bond University. The hospital has a strong commitment to teaching and support for its Junior Medical Officers.

Our region encompasses World Heritage listed rainforests and the pristine beaches of Evans Head, Ballina, Lennox Head and Byron Bay. This area is blessed by year-round sun, a tropical climate and a short winter. From lush hinterland villages, to Mount Warning, national parks, and sparkling beaches, the region is full of natural wonders and vibrant destinations all within a short drive from Lismore.





What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of an Advanced Trainee in Paediatrics is to provide safe and high quality care, assess and manage, under supervision, patients of the Paediatric Service. The trainee needs to be aware of their limitations and work in a collegiate and collaborate manner.

Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. The medical officer will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.

The position supports meeting the requirements for Paediatric training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
  • Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role (please address these in your response)
  • Advanced ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
  • Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences.
  • Advanced ability to prioritise workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  • Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of Paediatric Medicine.
