The Infection Prevention Department
The Infection Prevention Department provides high-quality, specialist services across the organisation to minimise the risk of healthcare-associated infections and ensure timely responses to emerging infection threats in cancer patients.
Aligned with the ACSQHC National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standard 3, the department supports robust quality and safety systems for both staff and our highly immunocompromised patient population. The multidisciplinary team includes infection prevention nurses, infectious diseases physicians, and project coordination roles.
Our Patients
Peter Mac provides care for patients with complex cancer diagnoses requiring integrated treatment approaches including immunotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy. As cancer therapies evolve, infection risks also change, making surveillance and data-driven infection prevention strategies critical components of patient care.
The Team
You will work within a collaborative and highly specialised team comprising:

The Opportunity
This part-time Epidemiologist role will support data-driven infection prevention activities across Peter Mac. Key responsibilities include:
Analysis and reporting of infection surveillance and audit data
Supporting outbreak detection and investigation
Contributing to quality improvement initiatives and research projects
Ensuring compliance with state and national reporting requirements
Supporting benchmarking and reporting to external bodies
This role is integral in strengthening surveillance systems and enhancing infection prevention outcomes across the organisation.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Postgraduate qualifications in epidemiology (PhD, Master of Applied Epidemiology, Master of Public Health or equivalent)
Experience or knowledge in infection prevention, clinical medicine or microbiology
Demonstrated experience in infection surveillance data management and analysis
Understanding of healthcare-associated infection surveillance methodologies
Ideally, knowledge of the Victorian health system and relevant reporting frameworks
Strong analytical, communication and teamwork skills

- Supports investigations of outbreaks and incidents within or related to the IP service and assists with the provision of timely reports and recommendations to minimise risk.

- Employs the skills of timely and effective communication with healthcare personnel and teams to guide and achieve optimal patient/ performance outcomes.
- Prepare Reports for Executive and Board Quality

- Provides education of relevant staff at a formal and informal level to Parkville and other campuses.
