Epidemiologist - Infection Prevention

Ongoing, Part-Time position - 16 hours per fortnight.
Up to $26,849.51 (RZ5) to $38,234.78 (RZ8) base salary per annum - Full-time equivalent pro-rated for part-time.
Parkville location, with multiple transport options at our doorstep.

The Infection Prevention Department

The Infection Prevention Department provides high-quality, specialist services across the organisation to minimise the risk of healthcare-associated infections and ensure timely responses to emerging infection threats in cancer patients.

Aligned with the ACSQHC National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standard 3, the department supports robust quality and safety systems for both staff and our highly immunocompromised patient population. The multidisciplinary team includes infection prevention nurses, infectious diseases physicians, and project coordination roles.

Our Patients

Peter Mac provides care for patients with complex cancer diagnoses requiring integrated treatment approaches including immunotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy. As cancer therapies evolve, infection risks also change, making surveillance and data-driven infection prevention strategies critical components of patient care.

The Team

You will work within a collaborative and highly specialised team comprising:

Medical Director, Infection Prevention
Manager, Infection Prevention
Clinical Nurse Consultants
Project Officers
The department works closely with Infectious Diseases and Microbiology services, and maintains strong links with key external partners including:
Victorian Healthcare Associated Infection Surveillance System (VICNISS)
Victorian Department of Health
Western Public Health Unit

The Opportunity

This part-time Epidemiologist role will support data-driven infection prevention activities across Peter Mac. Key responsibilities include:

Analysis and reporting of infection surveillance and audit data
Supporting outbreak detection and investigation
Contributing to quality improvement initiatives and research projects
Ensuring compliance with state and national reporting requirements
Supporting benchmarking and reporting to external bodies
This role is integral in strengthening surveillance systems and enhancing infection prevention outcomes across the organisation.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:
Postgraduate qualifications in epidemiology (PhD, Master of Applied Epidemiology, Master of Public Health or equivalent)
Experience or knowledge in infection prevention, clinical medicine or microbiology
Demonstrated experience in infection surveillance data management and analysis
Understanding of healthcare-associated infection surveillance methodologies
Ideally, knowledge of the Victorian health system and relevant reporting frameworks
Strong analytical, communication and teamwork skills

Position Summary

The primary role is to support the infection Prevention program at Peter Mac and Campuses.
Provide specialist expertise for research into and analysis of surveillance data related to healthcare-associated infections at Peter Mac.
Essential to this role is the ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams and contribute to project development and reports writing, data collation and analysis and quality assurance and validation.

Skills
Essential

• Post graduate qualifications in epidemiology (PhD, Master of Applied Epidemiology, MPH or equivalent)
• Background or knowledge of infection prevention, medicine or microbiology
• Experience with surveillance-related research projects
• Experience with data management and analysis
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
• Commitment to quality improvement in line with the National Quality Standards. Ability to work effectively as a part of a team as well as independently without supervision
• Knowledge of the Victorian Health system

Desirable Requirements

• Experience of working in the Victorian Health system
• Experience with health services research (e.g. working with health data, ethics applications, reporting to stakeholders)
• Familiarity with surveillance, particularly for healthcare-associated infections.
• Experience in the delivery of education and training
• Track record of publications in peer-reviewed literature

Key Accountabilities
1.Surveillance data analysis

• Supports investigations of outbreaks and incidents within or related to the IP service and assists with the provision of timely reports and recommendations to minimise risk.
• Positively influences practice changes to meet standards, practice guidelines and evidenced based practice.

2. Surveillance data reporting

• Employs the skills of timely and effective communication with healthcare personnel and teams to guide and achieve optimal patient/ performance outcomes.
• Prepare Reports for Executive and Board Quality
• Provide reports as required

3. Continual professional development

• Maintains mandatory training requirements specified by Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre

4. Teaching and research

• Actively participates in the development of research or quality improvement projects.
• Provides education of relevant staff at a formal and informal level to Parkville and other campuses.

5.Quality Improvement

• Provide expert advice based upon evidence-based practice, legislation, standards and guidelines and benchmarking against other recognised levels of national and international practice
• Contributes to policy development and review, procedure and clinical practice protocols.
• Work effectively with consumers to optimise patient experience by evaluating IP programs and services
