MEP Engineer (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) — Job Description

Summary

  • Design, coordinate, and oversee mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems for buildings and infrastructure projects to ensure performance, code compliance, integration with architectural/structural elements, and safe operation from design through commissioning.

Key responsibilities

  • Design &* engineering:* Develop MEP system designs, calculations, and layouts (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, power distribution, lighting, small power, lightning protection, earthing) to meet client requirements and applicable codes.
  • Coordination &* BIM:* Produce and coordinate 3D MEP models (Revit/BIM), perform clash detection with architectural/structural models, and maintain coordinated drawings and IFC packages.
  • Specification &* documentation:* Prepare technical specifications, equipment schedules, datasheets, load calculations (thermal, electrical), single-line diagrams, riser diagrams, and construction documentation.
  • Sizing &* calculations:* Perform HVAC load calculations, ductwork/piping sizing, pump and fan selection, electrical load schedules, fault level & cable sizing, voltage drop, and protective device coordination.
  • Energy &* sustainability:* Specify energy-efficient systems, HVAC controls, building services automation (BMS), daylighting, and recommend low-energy equipment and compliance with sustainability standards (LEED, BREEAM, local codes).
  • Tendering &* procurement support:* Prepare BOQs, review vendor technical proposals, evaluate equipment submittals, and support procurement and tender clarifications.
  • Site supervision &* construction support:* Provide site inspections, RFIs, technical clarifications, supervise installations for compliance with drawings/specs, and resolve site issues.
  • Testing, commissioning &* handover:* Develop commissioning plans, witness FATs, perform site testing and balancing, coordinate system commissioning, and produce O&M manuals and as-built documentation.
  • Health &* safety compliance:* Ensure designs and site works follow HSE requirements, safe access, and relevant statutory regulations; participate in risk assessments.
  • Quality assurance: Implement QA/QC checks, review shop drawings, inspect workmanship, and ensure adherence to standards and tolerances.
  • Controls &* integration:* Design control strategies for HVAC, lighting, and energy management; integrate BMS, SCADA, or building automation systems with other building systems.
  • Coordination with stakeholders: Liaise with architects, structural engineers, clients, contractors, and authorities for design approvals, statutory submissions, and project meetings.
  • Cost &* schedule management:* Support cost estimating, value engineering, schedule monitoring, and provide input for change orders and claims where required.
  • Regulatory approvals: Prepare documentation for permitting, statutory submissions, and respond to authority queries.

Qualifications & skills

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Typically 3–10+ years MEP design and/or site engineering experience (adjustable by level).
  • Proficiency with Revit MEP/BIM, AutoCAD, and design/calculation tools (e.g., HAP, IES, TRACE, Ductulator, PIPE-FLO, ETAP, Dialux).
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems (AHUs, chillers, VRF, FCUs), plumbing, drainage, firefighting systems, electrical distribution, LV/MV equipment, generators, UPS, transformers, lighting, and earthing.
  • Knowledge of local and international codes/standards (ASHRAE, IEC, NEC, BS, CIBSE, local regulations).
  • Experience with coordination, clash detection, and multidisciplinary BIM workflows.
  • Competence in thermal/electrical calculations, equipment selection, and preparing construction-ready drawings.
  • Familiarity with commissioning, testing & balancing, and producing O&M and maintenance documentation.
  • Strong communication, project coordination, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to visit sites, supervise contractors, and prepare site reports.
  • Professional registration or certifications (PE, CEng, LEED AP) desirable where applicable.

Performance metrics

  • Design deliverable timeliness and accuracy (RFI/count, revision rate).
  • Number and severity of coordination clashes caught pre-construction.
  • Commissioning success rate and number of defects during handover.
  • Compliance with project schedule and budget for MEP packages.
  • Energy performance vs. design targets and client satisfaction.
  • Health & safety incident rate on MEP scope.
