About CareFlight:
We respond above and beyond!
CareFlight is an Australian “for purpose” aeromedical organisation voted consistently as one of Australia’s most trusted Charities. Our mission is to save lives, speed recovery and serve the community through delivering our charitable social purpose.
We operate across Australia, with major base locations in NSW and the NT. Our specially trained Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics, Pilots and Aircrew Officers use helicopters, turbo prop aircraft, Aeromedical jets and patient transport vehicles to provide critical support to over 8,500 patients each year. We also deploy medical professionals and aircraft in support of defence, government and commercial contracts, and energy and resource sector sites.
We are service-oriented, dedicated first and foremost to our patients, and we are responsive and respectful of the needs of all stakeholders. We lead the way in delivering clinical and operational excellence whilst remaining agile, flexible and open to ideas, quick to serve, embrace change and adapt to new situations.
CareFlight has an enviable position of having senior educators in Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care, with our education program being second to none. We are highly respected for our international research and considered leaders in Aeromedical innovation. We believe this all makes CareFlight the natural choice for those seeking a unique clinical experience unavailable anywhere else in the world.
The role:
We are currently running our annual campaign for Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine Registrars. If you are a senior trainee or Specialist in Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Intensive Care, this could be the exciting opportunity you are looking for to launch your career as a Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Doctor. You will manage the most critically ill and injured patients in New South Wales.
Recruitment processes for these roles are aligned with NSW Health recruitment guidelines. Each role is full-time and based in Sydney. These opportunities are for 12-month placements with at least 6-months training time accredited by ACEM, ANZCA and CICM. Start dates align with NSW medical terms in February and August annually.
We have two (2) different opportunities for Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Registrars in New South Wales. One is a Pre-Hospital and Retrieval position based at Bankstown airport, with rotation to the busy regional helicopter base in Orange, 300km west of Sydney. You will have access to patients via winch capable helicopter, road and fixed wing. The other opportunity is an integrated Pre-Hospital and hospital-based Trauma Fellowship position on the CareFlight Rapid Response Helicopter based in Westmead and Westmead Hospital (Emergency or Anaesthetic Departments). This role involves both paediatric (medical and trauma) and adult (trauma) rapid response. In addition, there is research involvement with a new Pre-Hospital research program.
Our Training:
Previous retrieval experience is not required as CareFlight’s comprehensive induction program will build on the critical care knowledge that you bring with you to this job.
This package includes a place on our Pre-Hospital Trauma Course (PHTC), training in interhospital and international retrieval medicine, and aviation training including Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) and winch procedures.
Our ongoing weekly education program includes formal teaching sessions, guest speakers, scenario-based training, as well as onsite teaching in unusual locations. Enjoy learning about envenomation at The Australian Reptile Park, canyon and cliff edge rescue in the Blue Mountains, Hyperbaric and Diving Medicine while visiting the hyperbaric chamber, and train safety and rescue at the Transport Training Centre.
CareFlight is an accredited training site to undertake the Pre-Hospital Associateship in Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine AACEM (PHRM) administered by the Conjoint Committee of Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine (CCPHRM).
Essential Criteria:
- Final Year Advanced Trainee, Provisional Fellow, or Specialist in Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Intensive Care.
- International applicants must be Senior Registrars or Consultants in Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine or Intensive Care. UK applicants – completion of ST4.
- Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) (or eligible for registration).
- Completion of ATLS / EMST / ETM or equivalent.
- Experience in the care of critically ill patients (including trauma), and able to adapt clinical practice to work independently in both the pre-hospital and interhospital environment.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills.
- Be capable of meeting the physical requirements of the role and be able to work competently at heights (including helicopter winching) and in water.
- Be prepared to complete Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) with Emergency Breathing Systems (EBS).
- Hold a current passport and Drivers Licence (plus visa if required).
In order to be successful in this role, all candidates are required to complete a pre-employment fitness assessment. For local candidates, fitness assessments will be held on Saturday, 18 July 2026 and Sunday, 19 July 2026. Alternative arrangements will be made for interstate/ overseas candidates.
