Overview of Sydney Missionary and Bible College

Sydney Missionary and Bible College (‘SMBC’) has a vision to see thousands of loving, skilled graduates bringing the light of Christ to a dark and needy world. For over 100 years, it has aimed to achieve its vision by creating learning communities through which God prepares his people – theologically, spiritually, and practically – to serve Jesus in diverse contexts and cultures.

SMBC is thoroughly evangelical and Bible-centred, interdenominational in character; strongly focused on cross-cultural mission; and committed to providing a strong Christian community as the context for learning and transformation. Located in Sydney's cosmopolitan Inner West, SMBC is approved by the Australian College of Theology to offer a variety of courses at undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate level.

The Bridge is SMBC's Bible-centred, missions-focused gap year program for 18 to 21 year olds. Located at our Roberts-Dale Campus in Croydon Park, the Bridge program predominantly runs separately to other SMBC programs that are run at the main Croydon campus. Participants of the Bridge program are able to study at diploma or certificate levels.

The Bridge is built upon four core components that provide a solid foundation for a lifetime of following Jesus;

Biblical foundations
Ministry foundations
Mission foundations
Spiritual Formation foundations

The Bridge Pastoral Care Worker

Reporting to the Director of The Bridge, the Pastoral Care Worker will work closely with the Bridge Program and Pastoral Care Coordinator in the pastoral care of Bridge students. In particular, the Pastoral Care Worker will be providing pastoral care primarily to male students. Accordingly, we are seeking a candidate who is well suited to this role and can effectively support the needs of these students.

Primary Responsibilities:

Provide effective pastoral care of The Bridge program students in consultation with The Bridge Director and Bridge Program and Pastoral Care Coordinator.
Develop and facilitate The Bridge fellowship groups with The Bridge Program and Pastoral Care Coordinator.
Develop and facilitate The Bridge Single Gender Groups (Male) with The Bridge Program and Pastoral Care Coordinator.
Assist The Bridge Director and Bridge Program and Pastoral Care Coordinator with planning and administrating content and programs within the Spiritual Formation Foundations and Ministry Foundations units, including camps, seminars, and offsite activities.
Participation and leadership on The Bridge Cultural Study Tour.
Represent The Bridge/SMBC at external events to promote The Bridge where possible.

Building team life – working with The Bridge team in a manner that contributes to team health and vitality, supporting desired graduate student outcomes.
Create and maintain a friendly, welcoming atmosphere for The Bridge community and prospective students.
Building the enthusiasm and engagement of Bridge students for cross-cultural ministry and mission.
A commitment to the spiritual formation ethos of SMBC
Provision of effective leadership of The Bridge program students.
Understand and comply with SMBC Codes of Conduct, Work Health & Safety, Safe Communities, Privacy, and other College policies.

Person Specification:
The successful candidate/incumbent will:

Be a mature Christian and member of a local church.
Maintain a lifestyle consistent with Christian standards of holiness as a Christian example to students.
Be committed to the Vision, Mission and Values of SMBC and The Bridge program.
Be a team player, flexible in approach and committed to fostering a harmonious working environment.
Be willing and able to participate and travel internationally on the Cultural Study Tour.
Be capable of maintaining confidentiality, tact, and diplomacy.
Be an enthusiastic ambassador of The Bridge program with an affinity for the age group.
Be teachable and open to evaluation by students and peers.
Be willing to affirm the SMBC doctrinal statement annually and comply with SMBC workplace policies.
Possess a current Working with Children Check and maintain Safe Ministry training currency.

Knowledge, skills, and experience required:

Undergraduate theological degree with a keen interest in mission.
Experience in Christian ministry and spiritual formation of young adults
Experience in the provision of pastoral care
Experience in the development and administration of small-group programs and events.

Hours:

Part-time 0.6 FTE
Plus attendance on The Bridge Cultural Study Tour. Some further weekend and after-hours work is required at times.
