Full job description

About the Role

The Engineering Technologist will analyse project requirements and assist in developing, testing and implementing practical engineering solutions for the company’s timber processing and export operations.

The position will focus on the technical requirements of hardstand areas, drainage systems, heavy-vehicle access, quarantine and fumigation facilities, container-loading zones, wash-down points and supporting site infrastructure.

The successful candidate will also prepare technical documentation, conduct site inspections and performance testing, investigate engineering defects and coordinate the implementation of approved engineering methods with contractors, consultants, suppliers and regulatory representatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review project requirements for the proposed timber processing and log export facility, and assess the technical suitability of pavement, drainage, heavy-vehicle access, quarantine, fumigation and container-loading systems for the site conditions and operational requirements.
  • Inspect ground conditions, existing pavements, drainage paths, access routes, storage areas and site infrastructure before work commences, identifying bearing-capacity limitations, settlement risks, water ponding, erosion, contamination pathways and other technical issues that may affect facility performance.
  • Develop and recommend practical engineering methods for subgrade treatment, hardstand construction, pavement installation, stormwater management, heavy-vehicle circulation, quarantine separation, fumigation-area establishment, container loading and equipment wash-down.
  • Prepare and revise engineering layouts, technical sketches, material schedules, infrastructure specifications, work method statements and inspection checklists to support site implementation and quality control.
  • Conduct on-site technical and quality inspections during earthworks, compaction, pavement construction, drainage installation, fencing, lighting, wash-down facility installation and the establishment of quarantine and fumigation areas.
  • Test and monitor engineering performance indicators, including subgrade compaction, pavement thickness and condition, load-bearing performance, surface gradients, drainage flow, water containment, heavy-vehicle movements and physical separation between treated and untreated goods.
  • Investigate technical defects such as pavement cracking, rutting, settlement, water ponding, drainage blockage, erosion, runoff leakage, inadequate area separation and equipment-cleaning deficiencies, and recommend corrective and preventive measures.
  • Coordinate with engineers, site supervisors, contractors, suppliers, environmental consultants and relevant biosecurity or regulatory officers to clarify technical requirements, resolve material or construction issues and ensure approved engineering methods are correctly implemented.
  • Evaluate construction materials and infrastructure systems, including subbase materials, concrete or asphalt pavements, drainage components, sediment controls, fencing, lighting, surveillance systems, fumigation enclosures and wash-down equipment, considering their durability, compatibility, safety, cost-effectiveness and technical suitability.
  • Analyse site layouts and operational workflows for log storage, timber treatment, clean areas, container loading, inspections and heavy-vehicle movements, and recommend engineering modifications to improve biosecurity control, workplace safety and operational efficiency.
  • Conduct and coordinate the commissioning and performance testing of completed infrastructure, assess whether engineering systems achieve specified operational and compliance outcomes, and recommend technical modifications where required.
  • Maintain technical records, including inspection reports, test results, defect assessments, drawing revisions, material records, site photographs and commissioning documentation, and use these records to support the continuous improvement of engineering procedures and facility performance.
