About the role

Mater Private Hospital Mackay has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Documentation Specialist to join our team in a permanent, part-time capacity (18 hours per week).

This is a highly specialised role that works at the intersection of clinical care, coding accuracy and financial sustainability. As a Clinical Documentation Specialist, you will partner with clinicians, coders and operational leaders to strengthen the quality, completeness and accuracy of inpatient clinical documentation — ensuring patient acuity and complexity are appropriately captured while supporting improved organisational outcomes.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Registered Nurse who enjoys influencing practice, driving improvement and working collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

Salary range: $70.58 - $76.63 per hour plus superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 + access to many staff benefits!

What you’ll be doing

You will lead and support clinical documentation improvement initiatives to optimise data accuracy, compliance and revenue integrity across the hospital. Responsibilities will include:

  • Identify opportunities to enhance inpatient clinical documentation quality and sustainability
  • Advise and support clinicians, Medical Officers, nursing and allied health staff in accurate documentation aligned with ICD and AR-DRG classifications
  • Accept responsibility for the performance outcomes and comprehensive training of the Hospital clinical documentation team;
  • Monitor, measure and report on documentation improvement outcomes, including financial impacts
  • Identify and implement strategies to overcome barriers to effective clinical documentation as it relates to the recording of diagnostic and treatment information required for clinical coding;
  • Provide coaching, mentoring and training to clinical staff to strengthen documentation practices
  • Collaborate with Finance and Operations to ensure documentation processes are effective and aligned
  • Contribute to a culture of quality, safety and continuous improvement across the organisation

About you

You are a clinically experienced Registered Nurse who brings strong analytical capability, influence and a passion for improving documentation standards within a hospital environment. You will bring:

  • Current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse with no restrictions
  • Proven ability in implementing change and improvement processes in a clinical environment with successful outcomes
  • Broad-based clinical knowledge and understanding of pathology, physiology of disease processes and minimum of 5 years working in a hospital clinical care environment
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, critically analyse and solve problems to reach satisfactory and effective outcomes;
  • High level of interpersonal skills including demonstrated ability to effectively communication with clinicians
  • Knowledge of hospital based clinical coding processes, the ICDs and AR-DRGS
  • Digital and computer proficiency
