Primary objective
Ensure prisoner’s individual needs in relation to welfare support, pre-release planning and external referrals are identified and
managed through their custodial sentence and during the transition period from prison to the community.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Liaise and collaborate with departmental officers, other government agencies and non-government organisations to provide
relevant support services and welfare assistance to prisoners.
2. Engagement with prisoners regarding their needs, identify needs and referral to specialist internal and external services and
process prisoner requests for support in a timely manner.
3. Establish and maintain accurate statistical data collection and recording of the delivery of support services on the Integrated
Offender Management System consistent with Correctional Services policies and procedures for the management of prisoners.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated high level of communication skills and ability to interact with people from diverse cultures; particularly
Aboriginal people from the Northern Territory region.
2. Demonstrated ability to identity issues, ability to problem solve and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, in a
timely manner to address prisoner needs.
3. Experience in the collation and maintenance of accurate statical data for the recording of delivery of support services, and
documentation of accurate case notes and reporting.
4. Experience in delivering services and/or interventions in small groups and with involuntary participants.
5. Experience in the use of computers and associated software packages including mainframe databases, word processing,
spreadsheets and email applications.
6. Demonstrated high standard of organisational skills, ability to work unsupervised and knowledge of motivational interviewing,
cultural mediation and conflict resolution skills.
7. Demonstrated ability to actively engage and coordinate a range of service providers to support the welfare needs and
successful reintegration of prisoners into the community.
8. Current driver’s licence or ability to obtain.
Desirable
1. Relevant qualifications in social welfare, Aboriginal studies or associated discipline.
Further information
The Department of Corrections has a Smoke Free Policy, including e-cigarettes. Staff are not permitted to smoke anywhere on
