Details: The Health and Community Services Directorate is looking for an Environmental Health student who is studying Bachelor of Science (Environmental Health) or a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health recognised by Environmental Health Australia to join the Environmental Health team to gain on the job experience and financial support while completing their qualifications.
The ACT Environmental Health team provides a wide range of regulatory roles in both State/Territory and Local Government functions. This provides a unique opportunity to gain high level experience in multiple areas of environmental Health that will provide invaluable experience in your environmental health career.
As part of the team, you will be responsible for assessing food business registration and fitout applications, conducting routine food safety inspections, investigation food safety complaints and participate in the management of food poisoning outbreaks. You will also gain experience in issuing enforcement documents, drafting prosecution briefs and conducting routine and three-part legal food sampling.
You will also develop skills and knowledge in swimming pool and cooling tower inspections and water sampling and assessing compliance against relevant Codes of Practice. You will gain experience in hoarding and squalor under the Public Health Act and attend exhumations to provide health oversight. The Environmental Health team is also responsible for assessing development applications for potential public health concerns, trapping and monitoring mosquitoes, collecting recreation water samples across 17 sites in the ACT and potable and recreational water samples in Jervis Bay.
You will also be engaged and participate in quality assurance actives, reviewing Standard Operating Procedures and continuous in-house professional development. A training budget is also available for external training providers.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:
- Enrolment within an accredited Degree/Post Graduate Diploma in Environmental Health recognised by Environmental Health Australia Accredited courses - Environmental Health Australia Ltd. (eh.org.au).
- Current Drivers Licence.
- Prior to commencement, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
Note: Completion of the undergraduate degree is expected within six years (part-time study). On successful completion of the Environmental Health qualification the position transfers from an Administration Service Officer (ASO3) to a Health Professional Officer 1 (HPO1). A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.
