Junior Software & AI Developer

About the Role

3J Effect is seeking a Junior Software & AI Developer to join our technology team.

This is a broad, hands-on development role covering software development, web applications, business systems, databases, APIs, cloud services, automation and emerging AI technologies.

The position is suitable for a recent graduate or early-career developer who has strong technical fundamentals and an interest in applying new technologies to practical business problems.

You will work across different projects and technologies rather than being limited to a single development platform or programming language.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in the design, development, testing and maintenance of software applications and business systems.
• Develop scripts, tools and automated workflows to improve business processes and system efficiency.
• Integrate AI and Large Language Model (LLM) capabilities into software applications and business systems.
• Assist in developing AI-powered features including intelligent search, document processing, data extraction, content generation and workflow automation.
• Troubleshoot software, application and system issues and implement appropriate solutions.
• Test and improve software performance, reliability, security and usability.
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation.
• Work with senior developers and other team members on system design, technical solutions and project implementation.
• Perform other software development and technology-related duties appropriate to the position.

Position RequirementsEssential

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated technical capability.
• Recent graduates and developers with early-career experience are encouraged to apply.
• Sound understanding of programming and software-development principles.
• Experience with one or more programming languages such as JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, C#, PHP or similar.
• Familiarity with modern web or application development frameworks.
• Understanding of APIs, HTTP, JSON and system integration.
• Basic knowledge of relational or NoSQL databases.
• Experience with Git or other version-control systems.
• Basic understanding of software testing, debugging and troubleshooting.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability and willingness to learn unfamiliar technologies.

AI & Emerging Technologies

An important part of this position is keeping up with the rapid development of AI technologies. Experience or demonstrated interest in the following will be highly regarded:

• Large Language Models and generative AI.
• AI APIs such as OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini or similar platforms.
• Prompt engineering and structured AI outputs.
• RAG, embeddings, vector databases and semantic search.
• AI agents, tool calling and automated workflows.
• AI-assisted document and data processing.
• AI coding and software-development tools.
• Integration of AI capabilities into existing applications and business systems.
• Understanding of AI reliability, privacy, security and cost considerations.

We do not expect a junior candidate to already be an expert in all of these technologies. We are more interested in strong technical fundamentals, practical experimentation and the ability to learn quickly.

Highly Regarded

• Personal, university, commercial or open-source software projects.
• Full-stack application development experience.
• Experience with React, Next.js, Node.js, Python or similar technologies.
• Cloud experience with AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Vercel, Cloudflare or similar platforms.
• Docker or containerisation experience.
• Experience with automation and system integration.
• Familiarity with CI/CD and software deployment.
• Experience building AI applications, agents or RAG systems.
• GitHub profile, technical portfolio or examples of software you have built.
