Primary objective
Responsible for the ongoing provision of high-quality clinical care to the residents of Grote Eylandt under the direction of the
Regional Director of Medical Services.

Context statement
A Rural Generalist (RG) is a Medical Officer employed or regularly performing duties in a rural or remote hospital or community
setting who has advanced skills across a range of areas in rural and remote medicine. The Medical Officer will usually have been
admitted as a Fellow of the RACGP-RG or ACRRM (Medical Officers Northern Territory Public Sector 2022-2025 Enterprise
Agreement, Clause 17.51)

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide comprehensive primary, and emergency care to Groote Eylandt communities, as part of a multi-disciplinary rural

healthcare team
2. Maintain accurate, legible and timely clinical records, including medical reports and consultation records and communicate

effectively with all health professionals providing care to the client, and where appropriate, family and other relevant carers
3. Participate in the collection and maintenance of computerised patient health information including Medicare billing
4. Provide public health services to remote communities using a community development model to enhance health outcomes,

improve services and infrastructure
5. Participate in after-hours rosters as determined by the Director of Medical Services or their delegate
6. Develop and maintain the knowledge and skills for the position including expertise in both clinical and public health medicine,

through participation in continuous medical education, professional development, peer review, research and teaching.
7. Actively engage in reflective practice through quality improvement and clinical audit activities to enhance the clinical

outcomes and experience of patients treated.
8. Support and participate in education and training of other Primary Health Care (PHC) team members including medical

officers, remote area nurses and Aboriginal Health Practitioners (AHP)
9. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being

undertaken to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Current general medical and/or specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
2. RACGP or ACRRM fellowship or equivalent, with an advanced skill in an appropriate field
3. Broad postgraduate medical experience in one or more of the following disciplines: primary health care, chronic disease

management, paediatrics, general medicine, mental health and emergency medicine
4. Demonstrated interpersonal skills that promote effective teamwork and patient safety, and a commitment to patient centred

care.
5. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures
6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and contemporary information technology skills.

Desirable
1. RACGP-RG fellowship or working towards fellowship
2. Completion of AST in a discipline such as primary health care, obstetrics, anaesthesia, surgery, chronic disease management,

pal care, paediatrics, general medicine, mental health or emergency medicine.
