About the Role

The ACT Courts and Tribunal (ACTCT) is seeking motivated and resilient individuals to join the Forensic Medicine Centre as Casual Mortuary Technicians. This unique and rewarding role supports Pathologists during autopsies and other post-mortem examinations, contributing to coronial investigations and the administration of justice in the ACT.

Working within a professional and supportive team, you will undertake a range of technical duties including assisting with post-mortem examinations, collecting specimens, photography, documentation, and the reconstruction of deceased persons following examination. You will also assist with admissions and releases, prepare individuals for family viewings, maintain a safe and hygienic mortuary environment, and liaise with a range of stakeholders including police and funeral directors.

This role is physically and emotionally demanding and involves direct exposure to deceased persons in varying states of decomposition, trauma, infectious disease and paediatric cases. About ACT Courts and Tribunal

The ACT Courts and Tribunal (ACTCT) supports the administration of justice in the ACT by delivering high-quality services to judicial officers, tribunal members, court users and the wider community. Through a range of registry, court support, forensic, corporate and strategic services, ACTCT plays a vital role in ensuring the effective operation of the Supreme Court, Magistrates Court and ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal (ACAT).

What You'll Do

As a Casual Mortuary Technician, you will provide technical support to Pathologists undertaking post-mortem examinations and coronial investigations. You will assist with the preparation and examination of deceased persons, including photography, specimen collection, recording information and reconstructing individuals following examination with dignity and respect. You will also maintain the mortuary environment by ensuring facilities and equipment are cleaned and prepared in accordance with strict health, safety and biohazard management procedures. In addition, you will support admissions and releases, assist with family viewings, undertake administrative duties, and liaise with police, funeral directors and other stakeholders involved in coronial matters.

What We're Looking For

We are seeking professional, resilient and detail-oriented individuals who can work effectively in a unique and sensitive environment. You will possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of accuracy and professionalism. Experience in a mortuary, forensic, health, science or related environment will be highly regarded, however applicants with transferable skills and a demonstrated willingness to learn are encouraged to apply. A strong commitment to workplace health and safety, the ability to follow procedures, and the capacity to undertake physically and emotionally demanding work are essential.

Eligibility/Other requirements:

• Relevant qualifications in mortuary practice and/or a degree in science, health sciences, biology, forensics or a related discipline are desirable
• Applicant is required to be vaccinated against Hepatitis B and other applicable vaccines.

Notes: These are casual roster positions. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.
